7200RPM hard drive

Does a 7200RPM hard drive with an 80pin EIDE cable bring any performance enhancement to the TIVO? I noticed on mine that searching the wishlists or deleting all of the TIVO suggestion recordings seems kind of slow. I set up the TIVO suggestions for sitcoms and it recorded 18 hours of a Dif'rent Strokes marathon on TV land. (Gary Coleman, I must admit was a funny kid on that show. Too bad his career went sour.) It took forever to delete them all.(It sounded like the hard drive was going to die right there) I was just wondering if the 7200RPM and cable will speed it up? I know it made a difference on my pc. Anyone who has a 7200RPM hard drive in their TIVO please reply.

7200 RPM drives won't help your speed. They even have the potential to cause heat problems, especially in DTiVos.

I've seen some suggestions that replacing a standard drive with a 7200 rpm drive can cause some slight improvement in the speed with which menus and whatnot appear, but the posts I've seen suggest it's a fairly modest effect, and I've not seen it first-hand. I've also heard that upgrading the RAM can have a similar effect, but that's not an upgrade to be undertaken lightly.

As a general rule, 7200 rpm drives generate more heat and use more power than do 5400 rpm drives, so the conventional wisdom is that the 5400 rpm models are less likely to cause heat or power supply-related problems for themselves or for other TiVo components. There are substantial drive-to-drive differences, though, so it's entirely possible that the 7200 rpm Model X would generate less heat and/or use less power than the 5400 rpm Model Y. Also, I doubt if you'll find anything other than anecdotal evidence either in support of or contradicting the claim that 5400 rpm drives will be more reliable in the long term; few TiVo hackers have the resources to buy tens or hundreds of TiVos and drives to do a controlled experiment that would yield statistically meaningful results.

Hope this helps. Searching for 5400 or "7200 RPM"(or rpm).

I have 2 7200RPM drives. I haven't noticed any improvement in speed. The interface is actually slower now, but that's probably because I have an awful lot more shows saved nowadays than I used to have with the 14-hour setup.

As for heat, no problems. It stays pretty stable, fluctuating between 39 and 41 degrees.

I did search for 7200 and only a few posts came up. What?

You're the same guy who got only a couple of hits on a search for Sony too right?? I got 87 hits on "7200" when searching the Underground.

Make sure you choose the appropriate forum to base your search in and you will get better results.
