Rattling disc

When I got up this morning the disc on my TiVo ( now nearly 10 months old ) was rattling away a treat. I thought that it was doing an index after an update, but it's still at it 9 hours later, although all other functionality seems OK. I'm just worried that after a few days at this rate the disc will expire.
Has anyone else come across this ?

Try a reboot.

I get the same after about 30-40days, continual disk thrashing. All quiet after a reboot, until about 30-40days !!

In the past when I have asked about fragmentation I have been told that because of the way TiVo works, fragmentation doesn't occur!

I don't see how it is possible to have a disk system where fragmentation does not occur (unless every program was of a standard length which they obviously aren't!)

My guess is that the rattling (which I suspect everyone has to some degree) is due to fragmentation. What I don't understand is why a reboot would stop it!

Fragmentation problems only happen with lots of small files. TiVo records in minimum 1MB chunks to the hard disc and uses a proprietery file system.

The chattering is likely to be some process such as suggestions, indexing or combination thereof. Could also be some rogue process thats gone wrong.

To me it sounds more like a slow memory leak which eventually causes the operating system to start paging to disk.

Possibly but I've had quite an uptime on mine without problems. Maybe if it happens to someone with a serial cable hooked up they could have a look at the memory usage?

Do people that have this problem use Inside TiVo and/or Channel Highlights a lot? Thats about the only part of TiVo I don't use (and I don't have the problem). I know they sometimes have graphics etc...
