Question upgrading 14hr to 30 hr
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I currently have a Sony 30 hr unit (not hacked), and wanted to buy a Philips 14 hr unit and put in a new Quantum 30GB drive.
I realize that I'd have to copy my existing 30GB drive (from the Sony) to the new 30GB Quantum drive in order to run the new Philips unit with a 30GB drive, but my question is if this possible- to copy drive A from my Sony to a new Quantum 30Gb drive, and replace the 14hr Philips drive with the new 30Gb drive.
Oh look, I've gone cross-eyed. . . http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/eek.gif
Has anyone tried this before, and if so, with what results?
Thanks in advance

I know of at least one person who has run a Phillips drive image in a Sony, but I don't specifically know of anyone whose done it the other way around. The hardware is (for the most part) the same, so it should work.
My advice would be to just give it a shot. If it doesn't work, you can just put the 14 hour drive back in and you haven't lost a thing. Pretty low risk test.
(And be sure to post back and let us know how it goes.)

Earl,
You don't have to copy the drive from the Sony TiVo. You can use the BlessTivo program on the new 30g drive an pop it into the 14hr unit - BAM, 52hr TiVo. The BlessTivo program takes only seconds - copying that 30g drive will probably take close to 2hrs, and you'll void the warrenty on the Sony when you really don't need to.
(When reading your post I got that you want to remove the 15g drive from the 14hr unit and replace it with a new 30g drive - why not just add the 30g drive to the 14hr TiVo?)

Nullman,
I thought about that, and I think I'm leaning that way. I just thought I might like to eventually upgrade it with another 30GB drive to a 68 hr eventually (especially if 2.0 eats up 12 hrs).

Did it recognize the Phillips remote or the Sony remote?

2.0 will eat a total of 12 hours. A 68 hour unit already has 4 hours reserved, so another 8 would go away (leaving you with 60). I just wanted to clear up any possible confusion folks might have who are thinking it will wind up as a 56 hour unit.

P.S. OTOH, 14 hour units upgraded to 52 hours don't have any space preserved yet, and will drop down 12 hours to 40 hours with 2.0.
I'm still curious what's going to happen to Howard Stern's unit when 2.0 drops him from 72 hours down to 60 hours. Or maybe it won't. Or maybe it will ask him first. It can't be completely automatic, because then the upgrade would wipe out shows from his Now Showing list. That wouldn't be happy for anybody.
