Just how does one upgrade TIVO?

Sorry, I'm a newbie. I've been searching the threads, and I can't seem to get a take on this that isn't 30 posts deep into the process. Since I have no clue, can someone begin at the beginning and explain what I need to do to make an upgrade happen? Obviously I need a drive, but what drive? and then what?

Thanks in advance,

'Cat

See the TiVo Hack Faq icon at the top of this page...Click on it...

It was just recently created, but is good for info on what can be done and how to do it...

I tried that Tomcat, but didn't get very far either, lol. These guys don't want to talk about the process, they just want to refer you to printed material. That really doesn't seem much like forum discussion to me. But then, what do I know, I have only posted over 4000 messages on forums such as this http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

I spoke what I thought. It's always been my policy, I try and give information, when I have it to give. The process of exchanging ideas in an interactive manner, is part of the process of learning. Learn by action, by example. Often times, printed material just can't convey this effectively. Guys, pure and simple, that's what we were looking for, speaking for Tomcat without his permission. Sorry TC http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

When I don't feel like someone else is reciprocating free discussion? Well, it just goes against my policy! http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

No offense Green... I know you had good intentions. My comments are not directed to you really http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

If there is something missing in the FAQ, I'm sure the people maintaining it will happily update it...Is there a specific question you would like to ask that is not addressed? I am not a linux person myself, so I cannot offer a lot to help others...But I was indeed able to upgrade my 2 TiVo machines (1 a 14 hr and the other a 30 hour) to two 69 hour machines from the information posted here in the forum and in the FAQ...

Lex - are you clicking on the icon at the top of the page near the left side that says 'tivo hack faq' or the one that says 'faq' nearer the right side of the screen, which is simply a posting faq? You want the 'tivo hack faq'.

The tivo hack faq is about as detailed on the process as possible. And i dont believe i've seen a reticence to discuss the hacking process here, since i've been reading these thread for some time. Its just that you've come in towards the end of the development and a faq has already been put together. With your extensive experience as a poster, you should be familiar with the process of using faq's as a way to 'catch up', and its hoped you appreciate the hard work everyone did to make sure the faq was of high quality.

I would respectfully submit that if in the process of reading this you, or someone technically literate that you know, cant perform the process or dont feel comfortable with doing it, that you leave it be. But if you can install a new hard disk in a computer you should have no trouble with it.

If you feel the faq is too hard to follow in one area or another, there is a topic just a few below this at
http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Forum6/HTML/000170.html

where the faq final work is still being discussed. perhaps some of the folks developing and commenting have been so close to the process that we missed something that someone without any experience in it might need to have in there.

The reason the question was directed to the FAQ is simply because it's a bit too broad to be answered in a single response. If you want a less-than-detailed response:

- backup A
- bless new drive
- insert new drive as B
- reboot and cross fingers

I suggest picking a step that you have a specific question about and ask again.

Personally, I'm running into trouble simply because I can't seem to get my computer to recognise the 15GB drive. I haven't even opened my TiVo yet, I just wanted to fool with the drive a bit. I'm looking into what the jumper position should be....

You might want to check out:
How to upgrade your TiVo yourself
Be warned that it's five pages long.... but there's a lot of information being asked for.

I'm surprised nobody provided the link to the FAQ directly.

TomCat: Click this link, and read the whole document. I know it's long, but you really shouldn't attempt it unless you grasp the information contained in it. It's not hard, just long. Pay special attention to the bit about backing up your Tivo drive and the bit about the bootdisk.

Thanks Lex and the rest for all the good help. Coincidentally enough, ZDTV's "Screen Savers" had a nice segment on a TIVO hack just last night, referencing some of these same sources. I haven't been there yet, but they are supposed to have it on their website today.
