TiVo Upgrade on The Screen Savers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: timf

I just saw a promo saying they are showing how to upgrade a TiVo on tonight's Screen Savers on ZDTV. It'll be interesting to see how they decided to do it, but it'll probably use BlessTiVo (too complicated otherwise). Consider this a heads up to watch, but I will be back after they show the segment to report on it.

"Pat's" TiVo Hack????!?!?!

First, they mentioned the forum, and the discussion that goes on here. They continued to talk about the boot disk, BlessTiVo, and the limitations. They also showed Dylan's TiVo Boot Disk website (with address). I think they crammed just about all the information necessary into the segment. So, nothing special, just a discussion of the process on TV, but it is nice to see.

They showed my www.geocities.com/tivohack site.

They will have an article on their site sometime tomorrow with more details.

The most interesting thing Leo mentioned was they saw TiVo's at Comdex with ORB drives in them.

Oh yeah, sorphin should be happy since they mentioned the kernel hack too.

By the way. Anyone with about 5-6MB of storage space on the WEB who wants to host a video of tonights show, drop me an email.

I had TiVo grab it and captured it with my PC while I was at it.

Well, another possibility - TiVo it! It's repeated quite frequently.

I'd give you the storage space, but unfortunately, I only have a 64k connection http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/frown.gif.

I created a 6MB Real Video file of the hacking TiVo portion of the Screen Savers episode. I actually had enough room on the Geocities hack page I made.

If you want it go to the following URL.
http://www.geocities.com/tivohack

You will find a link to the file below the FAQ section.

Zipping doesn't gain much, but I wasn't sure if Geocities would let me upload an .rm file, plus it will play better if you download the whole thing anyway.

So if you don't have ZDTV and want to catch it, take a look.

It is about 10 minutes long. 320 X 240 video. Doesn't look too bad considering the size.

Mr. Belboz:

Did you ever consider that your copying the show breaches ZDNet's copyright rights and that you could be sued - especially since they seemingly have full knowledge of this forum. Not meaning to be a party pooper - but I am an attorney.

I would consider this to be fair use ...

Actualy it is a moot point though for a bunch of reasons.

1) I already removed it from my site. I was barely able to squeeze it on there and needed to make room for other things.

2) ZDTV seems quite cool about it anyway. I have actually talked to a couple of people from there. Guests on the show have actually done the same thing and posted clips on their sites when they were on the show. I think ZDTV knows they are not in most markets yet and don't mind the publicity.

3) One of the people at ZDTV I talked to mentioned that when the article goes up they should have a Real stream of the segment themselves. So you may see that on their site tonight.

Belboz...I thought we have the TiVo Hack FAQ on our site. Did not know you were maintaining both. If you need space, I have plently. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif
