TIVO cooling / power ideas

I recently added a 2nd 30GB Western Digital drive to my TIVO, and about a day later my TIVO basically froze up, it moved so slowly I could not do anything but power it down. I have been brainstorming how to fix this ever since. here are some things I have noticed.

1.) the power connector for the fan on the mainboard is controlled by the TIVO system somehow. I noticed that it runs sometimes and other times it does not, does anyone know how and when the fan runs? does the tivo have some type of temperature gauge inside?

2.) Anyone with an electronics background know what the capacity of the TIVO power supply is as far as the # of devices it can comfortably support. I currently have 2 hard drives (5400 RPM) and it seem unbearably hot. I have an extra 12V case fan that I could put into the TIVO and it has a power splitter so I could hook it up on the same power line as the hard drives. It would run 24hrs a day. This would definitely be better for the hard drives, but would it kill the power supply. I would run this instead of the TIVO suplied fan so there would still be only one fan. would the TIVO power supply support two fans if I could find a way to mount them?

This seems like it is rarely discussed if there is a forum open please point me to it. I think as we all add second hard drives heat related deaths (to the hard drives) will be more and more common.

Look in Setup, System Information, page 2.

Very unlikely that temperature is causing your problem. Mine runs 44c or even hotter with one 15Gb drive and gives me no trouble.

What speed is your WD drive? 7,200 RPM drives tend to be warmer than slower drives and don't work any better.

Slow is good in this generation of TiVos.

And is the WD ATA100 or 66? If it's either of those, have you replaced the standard IDE cable with a 40-conductor?

Actually a 7200 RPM drive could speed up your indexing and importing quite a bit.. If you've ever listened when that is going on the drive is just going crazy.. I'm sure it would help, but only if you improved the cooling in the box alot. Also a UDMA 66 cable is 80 conductors, not 40, standard IDE is 40.
