Why previews in 2.5 should be optional

There are times when I wake up much earlier than usual and this Sunday morning I opened my eyes about 4am and noticed the red TiVo light on. Since I had nothing scheduled to record that early, I assumed it was recording one of its previews from the Discovery Channel. However, that channel is switched to TV Asia in the wee hours od the morning and it's a pay service that I don't subscribe to. I turned on the TV and, sure enough, saw this screen: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS. TO SUBSCRIBE TO THIS SERVICE, PRESS OK. Instead of a preview, TiVo was recording this message. For those who don't get Discovery 24/7, TiVo should have an option to disable the recording of previews.

Why is that so vital? What's it hurt you if TiVo records a blank screen for 30 minutes?

It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help either.

If this is the worst thing that your Tivo does, then I assume you must be extremely happy with it, right?
No scheduled recordings will be missed. Think of it as a suggestion that you don't like. It's not using up any space that you can use, anyway.
Try not waking up so early! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

Uh oh, here comes the "Tivo subscribed me to a channel I didn't want" post http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yes, I am very happy with my TiVo. I was just making a suggestion, I'm not complaining (read my signature). http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

If you read his first post, you'll see that it is recording from the Discovery channel. It's just that his cable provider chooses not to air the Discovery channel's programming 24/7.

Stop assuming that the ways things are now, when they haven't even ramped up the previews, are they way they always will be. That show doesn't have to be on the Discovery channel, and it doesn't even need to be that particular show. It can be anywhere, on any network, it just depends on how it works out. Things will change. So, wanting to turn it off because "you don't get Discovery at 4 am" seems a bit silly considering that it doesn't have to be on Discovery or at 4 am.

Actually, I REALLY hope it stays just like it is. I do not watch the Discovery ch so I uncheck it as a channel I receive and I NEVER have to be concerned about the previews recording or about TiVo putting me on a ch that will, when I turn on the TV have one of the inane shows that Discovery puts on. With TiVo there should be NO reason to be annoyed at TV programming, even for a second.
I will never watch them SO I hope that they never get recorded on any of my TiVos. I see no value, for me, in the Showcases at all.
Those that want 'em can have 'em I just don't want 'em.

I actually love Showcases and am looking forward to the day when I can watch trailers for movies that are coming up on premium channels and learning channels and stuff like that.

If the upcoming promotion launching tomorrow is a signal of what types of things we will see from showcases or TM previews, then I have no problem with other people who choose not to see the previews. It just makes it better for everyone else.
I won't give it away here (someone else has already mentioned it elsewhere) as it should roll out on most TiVos sometime this week (if you have 2.5.1 and TiVo signals all of the boxes with the code to display the promo). Even if you don't have space to receive the previews (or don't get the proper channels necessary for the stuff), there have been accommodations made for those users too.

Sorry to disappoint you, but it won't work forever. The idea behind the previews is for the Tivo to grab them wherever it can, thus acheiving maximum coverage by broadcasting on several channels. Many channels don't show Discovery at night, many don't have PAX, etc, etc. You can't guarantee that it makes it anywhere, but by showing previews as many places as possible, you acheive a large audience base. So, while blocking Discovery works now, in the future, to block previews, you'll be removing most of your channels from Chans you Recieve.
Or you can be sane and simply ignore it, since they don't take up any space and are totally optional to watch. If you don't go to Showcases, you'll never see 'em. Happy?
