Backup new TIVO

Since Amazon cancelled my order for the $99 TIVO, I guess the only option left for me to get a TIVO is thru CC($299 - $200). I am going to get it tonight, and I was planning to make a backup after the setup(call toll free number, upgrade to 1.3...) just want to make sure that the device and modem and working fine, of course I wouldn't connect the Video source to it, to reduce the size of backup. According to other post, the backup size after the setup will be around 2-3GB.
Here is my question for the backup:

1)I have a 13GB Maxtor with my PC. Basically I can wipe off everything from it and use it as the backup disk. Then later install the OS and burn the splited backup files to the CDR. How should I setup my 13GB drive? I means should I fdisk it and make it one huge partition with FAT32? or primary FAT 2GB and the other 11GB for FAT32? I understand that we are using the LINUX utility to backup the TIVO drive and according to the HackFAQ, the utility disk support FAT32 as well.. I just want to make sure that I have a right partition for the backup.

2)Hopefully I can get the Maxtor 60GB HR from Staples. (what a drive, it is 60 miles away, hopefully they willing to price match with me.) If I do the upgrade later and started using my new TIVO now, what should I do after I finish the backup?

This is probably more than 60 miles from you , but the Staples in Valparaiso , IN did a price match for me with 9thtee.com . They also (grudgingly) honored the staples.com coupon .

What you are planning to do is exactly the way I did it, I wanted to make sure the Tivo worked before ripping it apart. Don't worry about partitioning your backup drive. If you use dd, boot Dylans disk, you can simply copy the raw disk image, so any partitions that exist on Tivo disk A will then exist on your backup.

ie dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdd bs=1024

One thing to bear in mind, is that your 13GB maxtor may not be as big as the 13GB quantum in the Tivo. I ended up using a 15GB quantum and as I'm
not going to use the backup was not worried about the 2GB of unused space.

Once I'd backed up the drive I booted with the backup just make sure I got a good copy. When your maxtor turns up, bless it and plug & play ;-)

mprice, thanks for the input, but I guess I am little bit comfuse now, what I was planning to do it, backup the A drive to a small compress files in my Maxtor 13GB drive, I was assume that they are in FAT32 format files. Then I will install Win98 again in the Maxtor 13GB drive... and then burn those compress files to CDR. Am I missing something? Mprice, you are saying that the dd program will make the raw file to my Maxtor 13gm drive with the partition.. then how can I burn them into CDR? I was still planning to use the 13GB drive for my PC. Thanks

To not worry about free space, it occurred to me to do it this way: use the 60GB drive to back up to, then burn CDs from, then bless it, and set it up, and the hey hey hey ...
