Ok, So I am a slacker.. I haven't been following along closely enough to know the question to this, and in searching I can't find a definite answer..

With v1.3 machine (used for about 3 months now) are the large kernel changes that sorphin came up with actually needed for a 60G Maxtor?

There was a debate going on in mid-late August, and I slew of people claimed that they blessed a large drive w/o incident. There isn't a final word in the faq, it still says get the patch.

Many thanks..

Nope! I believe they determined that sorphin's patch actually did nothing and that the original size limitation was due to a limitation in pdisk not the kernal. With BlessTiVo you can just bless the 60GB drive, throw it in and you're all set.

Actually, I don't believe it was pdisk. I'm not sure if anyone's sure why we had problem with > 33.8 gig drives initially. But we did..

Guys,

Thanks for the responces..

As for the problem, maybe it was bit rot? The planets were all lined up. Or someone didn't follow FDA guidelines?

Thanks again.

It was definitely not pdisk. In the last few weeks I've used pdisk with 60 and 80 GB drives, and it worked fine. This is with the same pdisk binary still laying around on my hard drive from back when we were trying to figure out the upgrade.

As far as what caused the initial (perceived?) problems with large drives, I really have no idea. Could it be a difference between the boot disk that people are currently using and the TiVo binaries that we had to use during the initial upgrades? While pdisk was definitely not the problem, perhaps there is a limitation in genAddDiskTiVoID or some such thing.

Nope.. That assumption came from when Ron tried to put a 40 gig drive in his Tivo, and the kernel wouldn't detect it properly. But when he set the 33.8 gig jumper, it worked.

At least that's my recollection of it.. That was sometime in early June.
