Has Philips Discontinued The HDR312??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: kschenke

I've looked at half a dozen online and local retailers and most of the all say that the HDR312 has been discontinued.

Here are the ones that say that:

Best Buy - Click Here
Orbit Comm. - Click Here
Good Guys - Click Here
ABT Elect. - Click Here
WalMart - Click Here
Vanns.com - Click Here

Circuit City doesn't carry it any more but I don't know if that's always been that way or what.

Does anyone know what's going on?

I posted this finding earlier and people said I was stupid for thinking that the stores not carrying a certain model meant anything.

But I thought the AT&T box was sold directly by them?

Maybe retail outlets will start selling an AT&T lookalike with the new design?

It wouldn't make sense for AT&T to sell them directly: too many logistics and supply problems.

Cheaper for them to coordinate with local consumer electronics store to put up posters and handous with ATT Broadband & Tivo logos.

This link http://attbroadband.tivo.com/flash.asp?page=get_index led me to believe that you had to get it directly from them.

But you did make me remember that AT&T does sell cable modem kits through Circuit City around here, so they could do the same with TiVo...

I just sent my brother (a recent convert) out to buy an HDR312 from the local WIZ - will he not find one there? What should I recommend as an alternate (I may add a drive to it one day so I want him to have as vanilla a model as possible)
thanks

I beleive the AT&T hardware isn't usable by anybody who doesn't have AT&T broadband/cable, so their announcement doesn't really mean much to the rest of us.

What to get? Well, the Sony 30-hour unit is still available, as are the 20-hour and 60-hour Philips models. For the price, I'd go for the 60-hour Philips. You get more capacity *and* the better remote.

Note: the 30-hour Philips is still available at some online sources, including amazon.

thakks for the response Mars, but I missed something - what's better about the remote?

I also thought some of the 20 hour units might not provide all the features provided in 2.5.1 SW.

I also thought the sony was harder to hack.

Rather than buy a 60hr, I'd buy a 20 and add a $80 40GB disk and bring it up to 65hr. (and save $220!)

Actually it appears to be just a regular standalone unit with AT&T branding. However getting AT&T to sell you one if you're not a AT&T customer may be a different story. I personally doubt they're going to deny a sale just because you're not an AT&T customer, but we wont know for sure until the 15th.

1) The 20 hour units have the reserve space required for the 2.5 features you're talking about. ONLY the 14 hour units, and the factory two drive 30 hour unit do not.

2) I believe the Sonys still use locked drives, however someone in the underground found a software hack around that a long time ago, so it won't stop you from hacking it.

As for the remote that comes with the 60 hour unit... I believe Mars Rocket was saying that it was better then the Sony remote, not the remote that comes with the other Philips units. AFAIK the 60 hour units use a standard peanut, except it's silver.

Yeah, I was saying that the Philips remote is better then the Sony remote.

In reality it's a highly subjective thing, but in my own little world (i.e. in my opinion) the Sony remote sucks.

Isn't it probable that this or an extremely similiar product, basically a SA in a DirecTiVo case, will be replacing the big SA boxes really soon?

It's actually an improvement to have a small box with basic controls on the front. These should have the same features as before with perhaps somewhat larger HD's, hopefully sturdier modems, the inability to be used unless subbed, and perhaps will-o'-the-wispy promises of new features which may become available thru the USB jacks.

Sounds like the price will remain the same, as will the current feature set.

Not a radical improvement, but not bad, and definitely not a step back.

It's very probable that the current SAs will be replaced by these units. However considering they haven't announced anything yet I wouldn't bet on it being "very soon".

Wrong. The unit itself is silver, but the remote is the standard black peanut.

Which means remaining inventory may be at clearance pricing!

But also that there may be a corresponding reduction in the production of mounting brackets for upgrade kits.

Yes, it is subjective. I think the Philips remote sucks and love the Sony. (And now I own one of each.)
