Upgrade 30hr 2 drive unit?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have succesfully upgraded my 14hr Tivo...Now I would like to
be really adventurous and upgrade my 30hr unit.

The 30hr (HDR310) is one of the early 30hr units and TiVo has verified to me that it is a 2 Drive unit.

My question(s) are as follows:

1) Is it possible to upgrade a 2 drive TiVo?

2) If Yes, I assume drive #2 will be replaced by the larger drive?

3) If so, can the drive taken out be used as a backup?

4) Again, if so, is there anything basically different in the whole procedure than what was done in my 14hr upgrade?

5) What is the largest upgrade drive successfully tested for this type of upgrade? And how much will it increase my recording capacity? IOW From 30hrs Basic to ?.

I hope the answers are affirmative

Thanks Fellas

Since you have a 14 hour unit you can upgrade it as long as you backed up the 14 hour A drive from your previous upgrade.

Copy the backup version you made of the 14 hour unit prior to upgrade to the A drive of the 30 hour unit.
Unplug the B drive prior to booting the copy to be sure it boots as a 14 hour unit. Now replace the B drive with a "blessed" large capacity drive.

Thanks Kenr

Sounds like you are saying it CAN be done. Have you done it
or know of any that were done sucessfully?

Also, what about my other question if you know....

Once you restore the backup of the original 14hr A drive, your 30 hr TiVo will be just like your 14 hr Tivo, and you can upgrade it with all the same options. If you felt lucky, and wanted to be brazen about it, you could get another drive B identical to the one you put in your first TiVo, the dd both the A and the B drives from your upgraded 14hr unit to the 30 hr unit and they would be identical.

You can use the second drive B as a backup, but of what? after you married the B drive to your 14hr unit, there was no longer anything worth backing up. You could restore your 14hr backup to the B drive and have it ready to go if you ever needed it.

Yes, this is the best bet. The question is, does he have a backup of the unblessed 14hr A drive. And if so, how is it backed up. If it is already backed up to another drive (clone not compressed), then there is no need for this. However if backed up some other way, then it would be good to have a bootable drive on hand.
