Sony Backup Size

Does anyone know how big a compressed backup of a new unused Sony Tivo should be?
I followed the directions of the FAQ and came up with a series of files that Windows reports is 3.83 gigs. This worries me a little because it's outside the range specified in FAQ (650meg-3gig) and my drive is almost full now so I'm concerned that the backup just stopped because the drive was full.
(No, I don't remember if there were any error messages on the screen when I finished. It was kind of late and I just turned off the computer. I don't think there was anything bad though.)
Thanks for any help.

The backup size varies greatly. Your results don't indicate a problem. That doesn't mean that there isn't a problem, just that the size doesn't indicate a problem.
Unfortunatly, short of restoring the backup to another drive and testing it, you really have no way of telling if the backup was successful.

My Sony backup was 22GB!
Instead of spending 2 DAT tapes to store it, I just went and got a Quantum LCT15 (or whatever the model number is) 30GB drive for $100 from 9th-tee.
That lets me keep the original drive as a true virgin for upgrading...

How did you get around the drive locking on the SONY units?
I tried both methods in the FAQ - and I couldn't get the drive
recognized on my LINUX box.

In order to get around the locked drive, you need to download a utility from the Western Digital website, boot up in DOS and run it and then reset and the drive will be unlocked. There is information about this in the latest version of the FAQ which you can get to by clicking in the upper left hand of the screen. (There's also info in some thread from within the last 10 days.) I initially ran into problems because I used an older version of the faq at www.tivofaq.com/hack which is not updated. For instance, the new version of the FAQ also indicates that the compressed backup could be up to 20 gig. Since my backup seems to be bigger than the free space on my 8 gig drive, I've ordered a new 30 gig drive for the backup.

I just bought a Sony Tivo 30 hour last night. The first thing I did was back it up before turned it on. The backup took about 4.5 hours and consumed 1.3 GB of disk space.
