Has anyone done a backup of a virgin 30 hour? Is it possible to compress it on a 12 gig drive?

21 gig gzipped for a virgin Sony 30.

1.3GB Gzipped from a Sony 30 hour that was never turned on.

This definitely appears to be a case of YMMV. It appears that the manufacturers are doing testing on some or all of the units. The TiVo Hack FAQ (see link above http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif) states that recordings of TV programs have been discovered on "virgin" units. My virgin Phillips 30hr took more than 20GBs to backup. So those who can back up in 3GB or less are the lucky ones IMNSHO.

Good luck (and remember that backups are EXTREMELY important),

Mike

Yeah, I have a 14 hour already that I added space too, and I bought an extra 15 gig drive for it to back it up to. I just wanted to avoid buying yet another extra drive for my 30 hour unit. I was hoping that I could fit it on one of the many 12 gig drives I have sitting around.

Same for me as NetJunkie. 1.3 GB backup from a new Sony, right out of the box, never plugged it in. Had that damn drive locking problem, tho...very annoying.

Ahh! You *******s! http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

The one I did was straight out of the shrinkwrap too, never even powered it up..

Yeah, I did my backup like 4 times to make sure this was right. I'm happy to see a small backup, but I was a little paranoid about it being TOO small. I looked around on here and saw the ranges and felt better.

I can't imagine the (compressed) backup being that small unless the Sony TiVo doesn't have an in-store demo. Does it?

It appears there is no in-store demo preloaded on units. It's just test video. Therefore it appears that demo data is downloaded after a unit is registered by the store as a demo unit, or demo units are shipped as demos. In either case, TiVo knows which serial numbers are demos and which aren't, which wouldn't jive with the thought that any unit can be a demo unit out of the box.

What keeps the backup from being really, really small is the test recording of video some (most/all these days?) units go through before shipping.

My 30 hour unit from Mercata had the in-store demo option on the startup menu in addition to the regular setup. I was not too happy when I saw it since I knew it would mean a large backup, and it did.

After running through the guided setup one time and rebooting the option was gone, but of course the demo video data was not zeroed.
