In doing my the Maxtor utilites (amset, udmaupdat, and wvset) -
My ABIT BE6 motherboard would not find the hard drive on any bus -
My daughter machine locked up -
I went to a Celeron box I am building for a friend's son -
and it required a Maxtor as a primary drive to find and all the software work -

some bios/ide controllers seem to require a master on the same chain as the slave...you're the 3rd to see this...so far i've never seen one, guess you're lucky http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif

Tom_h:
Did you know the "directions" that come with the maxtor boxed drives states that there must be a master on the bus before a slave will be recognized?

Hmm, no i didnt read them, maybe thats why it always works for me http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif curiously maxdiag requests that you remove all other disks from the system before running it...hmm...
As mentioned, some ide controller/bios combinations clearly require it, although i've got four machines, all Intel motherboards across a wide range (BX, 820, 815e) none of them require a master on the chain.
no harm in keeping a drive in there as long as you can keep straight which is which. my suggestion to remove all except the tivo drive was to keep someone from inadvertently stomping their regular disks with minimal hassle, particularly since it should work fine with most (recent) motherboards.
