HDR 312 03???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Tivo Newbie

I just picked up a new 30hour Tivo. The model is HDR312 03. I haven't opened the box for fear there may be some reason this 03 model is not upgradable. Can anyone provide any insight?

It's a single drive 30 hour unit, 1.3 is preloaded, and has a locked A drive. Same as a HDR31202, except the drive is now a Quantum lct.15 instead of the lct.10's they used to use (and are discontinued). You shouldn't have a problem other than the nuisance of the locked A drive.

I have just finished successfully upgrading an HDR31203 to 109 hours, using a Maxtor 60GB drive, so it is definitely upgradable!

As for the locked drive: At least in my case, the drive was definitely not locked. Rest assured that I do know what a locked drive looks like, since I also have an HDR31202 (bought one month earlier) whose drive is locked.

Careful. There are some reports about some -02s having two drives.

As long as you don't install 1.2.1 or earlier in it. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif

What? HDR312's are the only dual drive 30 hours I've ever heard of. HDR31202's are single drive 30 hours with 1.3 preloaded.

Is there a way for me to tell which model I have from the shell?

I'm at work and my TiVo's at home (I just bought my first one on the Mercata power buy 2 weeks ago). I've got DSL so I can telnet into my linux box and use minicom to connect to my TiVo (until I get ppp working). I'm logged in right now, but don't know how to tell what model it is.

From this command, I can see that I've got a single drive:
code:
bash-2.02# dd if=/dev/hdb of=/tmp/z bs=512 count=1 dd: /dev/hdb: Device not configured

My 312-03 also did not have a locked drive.

So - has anyone actually gotten a locked lct15? Or are false truths being spread?

See Two Drive 30 hr unit upgrade, first article by NYC1:

I have yet to encounter such a unit so I can't confirm it. My TiVos are 14hr units.

Personally (and no offense to him), I think he's just a bit confused. I'd be really surprised to see a 2 drive HDR31202. It makes no sense.
