I did it! 14hr + 45GB Western Digital = 70 hours!

I upgraded my 14 hour (and 13 minute) TiVo to 70:53!
It was so easy, thanks to all the wonderful instructions that everyone had already created. I used a Western Digital 45 GB drive.

Had to use a few jumper configurations to get it to recognize it properly. It was recognized as 45GB as the Primary Master but the Dylan 3 diskette wouldn't work on the PM (unfortunately). In a few configurations the computer only recognized it as 2GB and at those times the Dylan 3 diskette saw it as 30GB. I finally ended up just bridging jumpers 3/4 (which seems obvious when looking at the drive, but not when looking at the docs). Is the correct jumpers for this drive?

Creating the boot disk was a bit tricky: at home all I had was a Mac and a eMachine running Linux (but no connection to the outside world). Had to UnZip it, Gzip the image file, store it on a DOS disk, unGzip it on the Linuix box and create the disk...

Used my drive mount from http://www.9thtee.com/ and it fit perfect. Is this bracket from the same manufacturer or just very similar?

I just used the (shredded) drive cable that they have in there (if I have problems I'll switch asap).
Two questions: Why did they use the shredded cable and put it so far away when they could have put it closer? And why use a cable that will accept a second drive?

I panicked when the fan wasn't working, but I noticed it plugged in the the motherboard so I wasn't as concerned. Came back here and read the archives and felt even less concerned.

I bought the Western Digital from Computer City for $99 ($149 before rebates) this prices is good though Saturday if you can find them. I know the Dearborn Circuit City is out. This plus my bracket makes this an incredible upgrade for <$120.

Total times:
Before After
4:24 -> 20:33 Best
6:52 -> 33:09 High
8:56 -> 43:46 Medium
14:13 -> 70:53 Basic
I generally use High, occasionally Best, Medium for kids stuff.
I've more than quadrupled my storage and after losing my 12(?) hours after the software upgrade, I'll still have more than three times as much space. As long as I don't tape too much more junk I'll be a-okay.

Thanks so much for all the posts and information,
Gary

I'm just starting to look at the upgrade options, and I'm curious. How does 14 + 45 = 70 (almost 71)?

Umm..
Basic quality is 1.2 Hours per GB
45 GB + 14 GB = 59 GB
59 GB X 1.2 Hours/GB = 70.8 Hours = 70:48 Hours:minutes

There is a whole list of such configurations in the Tivo Hack FAQ http://www.tivofaq.com/hack/faq.html

I have the exactly same configuration, except I didn't purchase the drive mount, I use soem wire to tight it together.
I got 69:30 in basic quality. I am very happy of it. The only thing I don't like is TiVo keep recording those OLD movie for me.
