60GB Maxtor upgrade - and question
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Status: Successful.
Supplies: 30GB Quantum [backup] & 60GB Master [B drive]
Upgrade using BlessTivo went as planned, no problems. However, my 60Mhz Pentium Pro refused to recognize the 30 or 60 GB disk under MSDOS (and so could not use Dolly, etc), so I had to bless on my 800/800 dual P3. I could not, however, do the backup on that machine (long story), so I ran the backup using Dylan's disk and the FAQ's backup method.
Here's the question: I'm not sure that I have a good backup, as it would NOT boot in the Tivo. How can I assure that the backup is good, and how would I restore the backup if needed?
Command was: dd conv=noerror if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdd bs=1024k

If your backup is on a non-quantum drive I believe you need to apply the procedure in FAQ 4.10 before it will boot.

Basic, but often the problem:
Did you check the jumper settings (slave/master) on the backup drive when you tried to boot it as the A drive?

I too have success to announce - similarly adding a 60GB Maxtor to my 30 hour Sony. I followed the FAQ procedures and everything went smoothly. I decided to run my backup as Disk A (it's a Quantum LCT15), and all seems fine. I did notice some minor stuttering - it will be interesting to see how much more there is. I did run AMSET/OFF, but WVSET didn't like the disk.
I also used the bracket from 9th Tee, and it fit just fine.
50+ hours on high - yay!

Anythings possible, maybe I'll try it again when my bracket arrives and let you know.
So, if it doesn't boot, does that mean I have a hosed backup?

Oops, this is the one I meant to quote.

Ok, so I tried the 30gig backup Quantum in the Tivo when I cracked it open again to install the bracket. No dice on a bootup. I made sure that the jumpers were correct...
So, so that mean that my backup is toast? "DD" completed fine, and the blocks in/out were the same...
thx

Are you sure your A drive was not locked before you backed it up? A locked drive will display as 9 or 10 meg in size on the BIOS screen.

In my case, a 60Mb Maxtor only worked in a Sony TiVo after I added
runideturbo=false
to the bootparams. Hope this helps.
