Quantum lct15 as B drive in a Sony?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Does anyone know if the Quantum lct15 30GB drives will work as B drive in a Sony TiVo? Also, does anyone know if you can use a Quantum lct15 for both the A and B drive in a Sony TiVo?

Yes you can use any drive for B drive.

I have read in the Hack FAQ and elsewhere on this forum that the Quantum lct10 drives will not work as a B drive in the Sony TiVo.

You are correct, unless something has changed recently, the Sonys don't like a Quantum B drive.

I have done exactly as you are asking with my Sony and a second lct15 30gb drive and it works beautifully. I have 68 hours of recording time now. Just be sure to turn off disk locking, otherwise the drives won't spin up with the second one connected. The FAQ explains how to do it all. Good luck!

_Some_ don't like a quantum B drive, or more accurately, don't like 2 quantum drives. Firmware bug in the Tivo.

To be safe I've used WD's to upgrade Sonys since you can't tell if it has the bug ahead of time.

Actually it's a firmware bug in the Quantum drives. But, yes, the workaround is to turn off disk auto-locking from the ROM monitor. Then it will boot with two Quantum drives.

That's what I get for posting before the caffeine kicks in. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

And, FWIW, the Sony likes the Quantum LCT-15 as an A drive just fine. I bought one of these as the backup for the factory LCT-10 and decided to run the backup, saving the factory disk. Works fine.

I searched the FAQ for information on the ROM monitor issue without success. The only relevant section I can find on Quantum B drives is 3.3, but it contains no information on this issue.

I'm assuming from the message above that if auto-locking is an issue, the TiVo will not even boot. I have a TiVo with 2 Quantum lct10 drives. All seems well so far.

Are there other reasons to turn off auto-locking? What is the procedure to do so?

TIA!

Thanks for all the information. Just one more thing. The way to unlock the drive is in section 2.15 of the Hack FAQ? It says IBM PC but does this mean any IBM based PC?

Any reasonably modern PC should be able to handle it.

I think IBM as a (the?) PC standard went out the window long ago and with AMD's surge this last year ago Intel PC may be on the wane...

How X86 PC? http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif

This may not be in the FAQ yet. There's another thread out there which describes it. If you can suggest where in the FAQ it should go, I'll just add it.

That's correct. I saw that happen on a Sony. Turning off auto-locking let it continue booting.

There's really no other reason to turn off auto-locking. Only Quantum drives with TiVo's firmware can be locked, and by the time you receive your unit, the drive will already be locked.

See this thread for how to do it.

Read the thread (thanks) and checked the FAQ again. I can find no reference for either ROM or monitor. You might be talking about the diagnostic menu or some submenu of it, but I'm not a home and can't check yet.

What am I missing here?

Yup, I was referring to the diagnostic menu. I've updated the FAQ to include its proper technical name.

FWIW, I did my unlock, backup and "blessing" (using Dylan's Boot Disk) on an AMD Athlon 1GHz system. Worked fine (once I remembered that Linux was case-sensitive!)
