Can't back up A drive

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just received my HDR-31202, and after running through the first connection as recommended in the FAQ, I'm trying to back up the disk. I connected it to the secondary IDE connector (I didn't change the disk's jumper position, which is the leftmost pair of pins. According to the diagram on the top of the disk, master is the rightmost pair of pins. However, linux seems to see the different filesystems on boot, so I'm assuming this isn't the problem).

Anyway, the first time I tried to do the backup, it died after it had written 4GB. I was surprised at this, but I remembered reading that some disks had more on them out of the factory than others, so I didn't worry too much about it. I decided to try to write 5000MB at a time, using the count and skip functions in dd. However, the next time I tried to read the Tivo drive, it would only read 9MB, then it would exit with no error. I tried it with the count statement and also the exact statement specified in step 2.17 in the FAQ, both with the same result. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks.

I used the unlock utility (dlgchk) before I tried to back up. Is it something that needs to be done more than once?

I believe that you must unlock your drive each time you power down your PC.

Are you backing up to a single compressed file, rather than disk-to-disk? If so, the 4GB limit may be a FAT32 limit on file size -- Try unlocking your drive again (remember, press ctrl-alt-delete rather than powering down to reboot to the Tivo boot disk), and follow the directions to make the backup with multiple files (section 2.18 of the FAQ).
