Hello All,
I've been reading this forum for some time now. Great information everyone, thanks!
So, I have a pc near my TV which runs dos. I want to be able to connect to tivo with it using the tivo serial cable, null modem adaptor and gender change, along with a dos terminal program. I have everything, but cann't find/work a dos terminal program to make the connection. Has anyone out there been able to do this, and if so, which dos terminal program did you use?
thanks!

Search Google for "dos terminal program", or do the same on ZDNet.

I have and I've tried a few of them... telix, kermit, and another one I can't remember the name of, but I can't seem to get any of them working. Maybe I just don't know the right settings (ie. terminal type, if it needs an init string, etc)

I just looked - couldn't find any dos-based terminal program myself.
This may sound odd, but if you're using DOS only on the machine, you may be able to find some QBasic examples on the web of what you want to do.
Essentially you'll need to view the help for the "OPEN" keyword, you can then have the INPUT printed to the screen and return simple input back to TiVo.
In fact, QBasic may have some built-in examples for communicating via the com port.

One of the hot terminal programs for DOS, back when DOS was king, was Telix. It still runs, and I suspect that you can still get it...
Also, if you are running an M$ product such as 9x or NT, you can use Hyperterminal for this purpose.
Lastly, you can also use Norton PC Anywhere to establish a terminal session. I've had success with all of these methods myself - your mileage may vary...

I've used DSZ in terminal mode:
C:\>dsz port 1 speed 9600 d t
YMMV

Yep, Telix was one of my favorites back in the BBS days. It can be found here

Thanks for the info!

Telix? I remember that. I migrated to Terminate, which I found to be damn nice, except for a few little niggling bugs (IEMSI anyone?).
Only annoying thing is the registration system, and that it hasn't been updated in a long time.
