OK.. I hate to post something like this.. but I can't find the answer...

I have a virgin sony tivo that I am trying to backup the "A" drive.

I am using the following command:
dd conv=noerror if=/dev/hdc bs=1024k |gzip | split -b 650m /mnt/sometivofilename.gz

It runs for about 10 seconds, I get a file "sometivofilename.gz" in the mnt directory which is 540k... way to small.. seems like it is only grabbing one partition to backup or something..

yes I am mounting /dev/hda1 as /mnt
yes I have my tivo drive as seconday controller primary drive
yes I am lost

any ideas??

Sounds like a locked drive.

and how do I unlock it? http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

It's described in the Hack FAQ. I've never done it, but it involves running a utility (from Quantum, i believe) then running the backup without power cycling the drive. Check out the FAQ for more info.

Anyone reverse-engineered DLGCHK and reimplemented it in Linux sourcecode yet? I'd prefer to keep my upgrades in the Mac/LinuxPPC domain, but I'll need drive unlocking capability.

Or can one alter the boot block on a locked drive to activate shondss so as to both set the crypto password and use the TiVo to perform a drive-to-drive backup? Or use the diagnostic menu to disable locking for backup on a computer?

Any issues with turning off a TiVo before starting the initial General Setup?

I was planning on imaging the drive to a new drive and then make a pure white virgin backup to CD-R from the backup for redundancy's sake.

Man, you're lucky. I have a Phillips with a 30G drive - backup ran to 33 (that's thirty-three) 650meg files .... No hope of a CD-R backup here.

This was with a virgin drive too http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/frown.gif
