Getting spare parts, warranty sucks

Well, I'm unfortunate enough to have my TiVo modem die 110 days after I bought the unit. The warranty on this thing is only 90 days! 90 days!!
My manual says it is 90 days parts/labor, and between 90 days and 1 year it is parts only. But when I called TiVo I was told that after 90 days it would always be $99+shipping for repair.. regardless of whether it was 91 days or 1 1/2 years old etc.
So my position is that if I'm going to pay $100+, I want to get some parts since I'm on my own. Isn't there some way to buy a new motherboard for like $75-$99 or something? That way at least I can pop it in and not have to spend hours configuring a new system.

Try the for sale forum to see if anyone has a dead TiVo for sale (or request one).
The only problem with your method is that (1) Crypto chip is on motherboard. You'll have to transfer service from the old serial number to the new one (if you have lifetime subscription). (2) Might not work under 2.0 when the signed kernel comes out.

I seriously doubt it would be cheaper to buy a new mainboard. I have the "service manual" for the SAT-T60 (which is really a partial reprint of the owners manual with a few exploded views and some short parts lists) and the price for a T60 mainboard ( a6705084a ) is $762.17!

Yeah, no doubt it will be cheaper to just find an old 112 for $99 or so -- at least that's what I paid for mine with all the rebates.
Once I get a copy of the microcom port, I'm going to see if I can get a response from the modem. The system logs say "modem freeze!" but I see in the logs where it has worked intermittently. I may just reflow the solder on the modem chip & eprom, in case it is just a cold solder joint.
Hard to believe any lightning etc surge would blow the processing logic on a modem.. in all cases I've seen before it will just blow the telephony crap but the modem still responds. modemtest may just be too picky, and perhaps the modem has just glitched into some funky mode which is recoverable.
Regardless, thanks to the hacks available in this forum I have it downloading via my Internet connection. Problem is, I now have to run a 75ft serial cable through the ceiling to get it all connected to the big screen again.
