Just got a 20hour Tivo for Xmas. After reading all the Info
on backing up the A disk and armed with the A disk from the Tivo a new Maxtor 80GB and the software off to the good old PC to do the backup. After 8 hours I had 32 files tivodisk_xx at 665,600KB and 1 file at 5xx,xxxKB Seeing this
I said self... Theirs no way your going to get all this on a couple of CD's. Thinking that I typed something wrong in the DD command line like leaving out the gzip part. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/frown.gif
So I deleted all the files and started over. This time after
about 8 hours I get a message 21483+1 Records in, 21483+1 Records out. Looking at the files I now have 2 files one 665,600KB the other 529,864KB. So before I powerup the Tivo for the first time my question is.
Does this look about right for file sizes? I know from reading here that the backup size can very. But what has been the sizes for your backup files?
Did I get a good backup? http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/confused.gif

My TiVo is a 30G Phillips HDR312-03, the A drive is a Quantum Fireball LCT15-30, version 1.3 software. The message from the dd command was "28629+1 records in, 28629+1 records out". The in-store demo was on the disk but was never installed.
My backup created three files, two 650MB (681,574,400 bytes) and the last 246MB (258,560,754 bytes).
I read one post from a guy whose backup took one CD, so you probably have a good backup. I've read that the amount of time the TiVo recorded live video during the factory test/burn in makes the size vary.
If you are unsure and have the space on your PC drive (and the time), move the backup files to a subdirectory and do the backup again. Then "fc /b" the files so see if they match. I used fc to verify my CD's before deleting the backups from the hard disk. (fc is as un-communicative as dd until it finishes or finds an error)
