This is just a test.

I've noticed that the new forum has the ability to make a thread permanently "on top", and I'm considering putting the hack FAQ up here.. Anyway, I'm going to leave this thread up top for a day and see how it works. What do you guys think?

Yeah. Give it a title like "ULTRA COOL TIVO TRICK!!!" or something so the newbies will hit it before looking at anything else.

Well, appearantly David has reverted the forum to an old method for the time being.. Seems there's some problems not resolved yet. Still, this thread seems to be staying up top when I reply to others.. Of course, I now have no way to "unbump" it, but I'll just delete it when I feel ready to. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

I know that, as a lurker for the past 6 months and a poster for the last six days, my opinion may not be worth beans.

Anyway, that would be a major pain, seeing something seemingly significant and yet static on the page. Additionally, it's rather redundant, with the FAQs prominently linked on the left side in nice big letters.

Well, not any more. David has just turned off all the new features because of some bug. Unless of course we keep replying to this thread.

It would indeed be annoying. But would it be more or less annoying than 5 new posts a day asking, "i dont no about tivo i just heard about it from my friend can u tell me what it is how do i hax0r it"?

People just aren't looking anywhere but the topic list for information. What I'd really like to see is a tivo guy image "rush out" at you the first time you visit the forum (cookie?). An image that expands to fill the whole screen with a message like, "CLICK HERE TO READ THE TIVO FAQ BEFORE POSTING"

actually, I dig that idea... but maybe the new layout will actually be effective in alerting people to the presence of the FAQ's... time hasn't passed enough to really know.

wait two weeks or something before doing something semi-permanant that might be annoying

Frankly, I wouldn't want to see more than one or two "bumped" posts. Any more than that and we'll have to start scrolling to the bottom of the page to see new stuff.

But that one bumped post better contain a lot of information - seems more useful tidbits of information keeps getting posted, but the FAQ doesn't catch up. Although, we can't let everyone post to it, otherwise we have a 100 page long post that keeps getting bumped on top...

And thanks Otto, for telling us what happened with the forums. I thought someone literally took our suggestions and ripped out all the nicer (and needed bits).
