Extra screw in SAT-T60?

A friend of mine just ran into a weird problem trying to upgrade his T60.

There's an extra screw holding in the drive bracket!

Besides the usual two on the side opposite the power supply, there's now also one on the power-supply side. It sits in the front of the two blue grommets. And it's behind a bunch of capacitors, making it VERY hard to unscrew.

Has anybody else run into this? If so, how did you get around it? His straight torx screwdrive wouldn't fit around the capacitors. It looks like a VERY small L-shaped driver might work, but it would have to be quite small.

I ran into the same problem. I got around it by using a small 1/2"-3/4" bit (without the "screwdriver" part that usually holds the bit) that just fit between the screw and the capacitors and then holding onto it (from the top) and turning it with a small pair of Craftsman Robogrip pliers. Even then, I could only turn it about 1/8 turn at a time and it took forever to get it out. Needless to say, that screw did not get reinstalled following the upgrade.

I have only upgrade one T60. Don't all T60s have this third screw?

I didn't have much problem, with mine. I just angled the driver in there enough to unscrew it. Meanwhile, I haven't been able to get my upgrade to work. Please post your results.

All the Sony DirecTiVo's I've seen have that 'extra' screw. I saw a Philips a while back and it didn't have it - it was also a very early model. Interestingly, the early editions of the Sony repair manual do not show this screw in the diagrams. It was a bit of a pain to get the screw out without dropping it into the unit (I angled the screw-driver, as well).

tivo-joe -- its seems the problem you are having is 'testing your backup on a non-quantum drive' not upgrading your T-60 (specifically)-- you may want to try reposting with a slightly different topic. i wish i knew the answer to your question - personally, i only use quantum drives as boot drives and have had no problems...

What screwdriver did folks use to get this screw out?

The 30-piece set from 9thtee was too fat to angle around the capacitors and still get a good grip on the screw.

I use a dedicated Torx T-10 driver - you can pick them up at Home Depot for about $2.50...

Sure enough. The T15 (not T10) from Home Depot was just narrow enough to make it around everything and turn the screw.

I just hadn't heard of this screw before...(then again, I'd only seen an early Philips).
