Sleep mode to quite HD?

Newbie to tivo hacking, so I'll get the KY out now...LOL
Is there any way to hack in a feature that would halt the video capture to the HD (ie 30 min instant replay buffer)? My tivo is in my bedroom, and I have to sleep with a pillow over my head because I find the HD chattering to be annoying as hell. I would think if you weren't streaming video to the HD, it would be a lot quieter. It could be set up to resume the recording at 0 (like when you change the channel) when any Tivo related button on the romote was pressed.......
Thanks!

Well, first of all, I must comment on the originality of people's handles. StapleHead -- How unique!!
If you don't want the Tivo to be recording while you sleep, you could always just pull the cord. Guaranteed quiet the drive.
Or the system could be put in the living room.
Some have reported success by putting more sound deading material in the case, but be careful about heat problems.
Don't know about any hacks to quiet the drive == except, maxtor drives do have a utility to control it's noise level.

With backdoors enabled you could kill MyWorld. Then do a restart to bring it back.

have the same problem and it is hopeless! only thing is that you can get used to the noise after a while and then it won't bother you so while you sleep.

I've got a two channel modulator. My two TiVos are in my living room and I modulate their signals to channels 85 and 87. With an IR repeater in my bedroom, I can control or watch either TiVo from either room.

I know this has been said before, but..
You guys either - Have the noisiest Quantums on the planet
- Sleep with TiVo four inches from your head
- Need to be earning a living listening for enemy submarines "bare-eared", or safecracking without a stethescope
I have two 14 hour TiVos, both upgraded with Quantum drives, so four drives in all, and I can't hear the two of them together if I'm more than a couple of feet away in a completely silent room!
Either of you "noisy TiVo" guys own a Rat Shack SPL meter? I'd be interested in making a comparison..

The only way to get it to stop recording is to feed it a bad signal. Either pull the Coax (if using cable) or set it to a empty channel and turn off the suggestions.
It will still continue to index if it made a call recently.

Is the TiVo on a hard surface? Generally, PCs and VCRs sound much louder when they're on a hard surface. If the cooling vents are underneath (I never really thought about where they are on a TiVo), you can get special foam to put under it or you can just use any old foam, if the vents are elsewhere.

Hmmmm, manolan, my Tivo is resting on top of my reciever, I suppose it could be resonating.....
Actually, bsnelson, my Tivo is about 12 feet away. If I leave my computer on, the constant sounds of the fan drowns out the tivo. When I shut my computer off (makes my room very quiet), the tivo drives me mad (kinda like "chinese water torture"...LOL)
I don't have a sound level meter, wish I did.....
But again, would it be totally impossible to halt (via a hack) the 30 min, streaming to disk function? Or it that functionality embedded in the hardware?
