I'm new to the board and recently bought a tivo, its wonderful and stuff but i've noticed that it's been freezing between 9 and 9:30am everyday for the last few days. The unit is a Philips 30hr 2 drive unit. I hacked it to work through the a dsl line instead of the phone (since I don't have a phone) and its worked wonders. Just this daily freezing thats really annoying. At first I thought it was the heat, but I monitored the internal temp and it never goes beyond 39C and its consitantly freezing between 9 and 9:30am in the morning. Anyhelp would be appreciated. Thank you.

By "freezing", do you mean becoming non-responsive, eventually coming back, or do you mean locking up, requiring a reboot?

What time has it been doing it's daily "call" lately? (I know you're using DSL).

it locks up... if its recording something it'll have the frozen frame up and if it was sitting idle, it'll have th frowning tivo saying it couldn't tune into anything. only thing i could do is pull the power and plug it back it. Thanks

Your particular form of hacking didn't require opening the case, right? If that is the case, your warantee should still be good, I think (assuming time is on your side). Of course, restore config files to their pre-DSL state before doing anything regarding warantee. It really does sound like it could be a hardware defect. Unfortunately, this is going to be rather touchy should you need to get TiVo and/or Philips involved.

Happening at the same time each day is odd, though, especially given that it's not around the time of the daily download.

Let's keep talking this one through, though: Cable or satellite? Strong cable signal? Always locks up while recording (is there a program you record at 9am every day)?

unfortunately my unit didn't respond to the "factory" password so I had to open it and use dylan's bootdisk to get a shell. So I voided my warranty http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/frown.gif . I don't record anything at 9am at all. Tivo will occasionally do one of its Tivo Suggestion recordings and i'll see that freeze up. Some other days I'll just get a frowning Tivo. I have cable, no box and strong signal, so I doubt thats it. One thing I did notice in the tverr logs there are a lot of conflicting season pass messages. I used the conflict resolving trick posted on the faq to get The West Wing and ST: Voyager to go in as season passes (both show at 8pm Wedsnesday) but Voyager has a second showing later on in the week that it does pick up. Maybe that could be it? Thanks for you help.

You probably want to take this up in Underground (or maybe a mod could move it there). Sorry I couldn't help http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/frown.gif

Good luck.

You could try doing a Factory Reset. If you do, let us know the results.

Make sure your "Channels I watch" has no scrambled or unavailable stations in it!

Perhaps TiVo is trying to record a suggestion at 9am on a station that doesn't transmit a signal? There definitely appears to be a bug or something in TiVo that causes it to sometimes crash when the incoming signal is bad, I've seen it happen on 3 different units.

Try forcing a daily call. There is a problem in V1.3 where for whatever reason it locks-up during some part of the daily call processing. If this is the cause of your lock-up, forcing a daily call will usually correct the problem. If forcing the call doesn't "fix" it, then you probably have a different lock-up problem.

I forced a daily call, AND I did the guided setup again. It didn't freeze this morning!!! but I noticed these messages in my /var/log/kernel file

Feb 20 06:06:24 (none) kernel: mediaswitch: returning 0 from standin tune after
tuning to ch 0 with adjust 1
Feb 20 06:06:40 (none) kernel: mediaswitch: returning 0 from standin tune after

Feb 20 07:04:59 (none) kernel: mediaswitch: returning 0 from standin tune after

Feb 20 08:35:00 (none) kernel: mediaswitch: returning 0 from standin tune after

Feb 20 13:04:58 (none) kernel: mediaswitch: returning 0 from standin tune after
tuning to ch 0 with adjust 0
Feb 20 15:00:00 (none) kernel: mediaswitch: returning 0 from standin tune after
tuning to ch 0 with adjust 0

I've never seen them before, but what interests me is theres a message for 9AM (15:00:00). I'm wondering if this could be a clue as to what was happening. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

I wasn't aware that TiVo stores its time info at GMT...I guess you DO learn something new every day...

Sorry I can't be of more help...

Not at all sure, but those messages look to me like you have a channel in your lineup with no signal. If so, you need to delete it.

Just a thought.
