Broken Sony Tivo... Advice?

Greetings.
I have a 30hr Tivo that Has been working great for some time. I have never cracked the case open nor done anything with the drives. I did enable PPP via the Serial port so I could look around on the system but never did anything else other than enable the PPP Stuff. I recently bought a newer 5th gen dss receiver and figured I would use the Serial port instead of infrared, When I changed that preference on the tivo, it hung. I unpluged it, and plug it in, it goes through the boot screens, (Normal ones via the TV) and then hangs at a black screen. Any advice? (I've unplugged the DTV unit from the serial port which didn't help)

Sounds like you kind of backed into the underground http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif. I think many here believe you are probably morally beyond asking help from Tivo. Enabling PPP on the serial port and then enabling the serial port for DSS sound like they might be related. My suggestions would involve cracking open the case. Others will probably have less intrusive ones.

I agree I have gone past the Lines of "Tivo's" Help, but I wanted a no bs answer. I as more interested in the workins of the os, but didn't want to screw with the drives/etc. as I said in my last post. Am I going to have to recover from a sony backup now? or what? There is life left, and yes I believe the hang is due to the ppp mod and switching the dss control mode over to serial, but I want to recover it and get it back to normal. Is there a way to change the Dss control mode via the os back to ir to fix this? Or is this asking to much here.. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif

No, but you can disable your PPP hacks with minimal effort..
Firstly, I hope you used the factory password.
Get in there, and set "runmyworld=false". This will prevent the myworld from booting, and hopefully prevent Tivo from trying to grab the serial port. Then, boot the sucker and get back in via PPP or shondss.. disable your PPP mods (comment them out), then reboot. Now, remove the "runmyworld=false" line and reboot the tivo.. Hopefully it'll grab the serial port this time. Then you can either disable the Tivo from using the serial port, or just leave your PPP mods disabled. They don't work together.

Nope. I don't think there is too much to ask of this group. You've crossed over to the "dark side" now. Might as well crack open the case http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/wink.gif.
