backup questions (no space left on device)

Somewhat ignorant questions...
I finally decided to take the plunge after receiving 2.0.1. I have a 30 hr Sony unit.
Last night I proceeded to make a backup, having read the FAQ. Locked drive of course. I tried dlgchk but couldn't get it to work, so I played the old IDE cable switch-a-roo. This worked fine, and the drives were reported at exactly the same size, 30022. So I proceeded to make a backup using Dylan's disk. I used the following command:
dd conv=noerror,sync if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdd bs=1024k
This morning when I checked on the backup, it said:
dd: dev/hdd: No space left on device
28629 +1 records in
28629 +0 records out
Does this mean that my backup drive is ever-so-slightly smaller than my TiVo source drive, and it ran out of room trying to write the last file?
Should I just try again, should I change the dd command in any way (smaller block size?), am I screwed, would it work to get a 40 gig quantum drive to use as backup instead of the 30 gig?
Thanks VERY MUCH in advance for any comments.

Don't know the answer but I have the exact same situation. 30hr Sony unit. Got a 30G Quantum Fireball Plus AS as a backup drive. The drives (after dlgchk) showed the same size and after trying to backup the drive twice I get the "no space left on device" error with 28629+1 records in, 28629+0 records out.
Seems too coincidental to say both our new drives had bad sectors that resulted in the same number of records! I haven't tried the backup in the Tivo yet. I also have a 40G drive but haven't tried backing up my original A drive to it yet (it was supposed to be my new drive B).

Snowden- are you running 2.0.1 also? I wonder if this could be a new issue with 2.0.1 and Sonys.
Very odd that we got the exact same numbers... I think our backup drives are different, too. My drive is a quantum lct10 30 gig (appears to be identical to the TiVo drive).

I haven't been upgraded to 2.0.1 yet. There is another thread here that suggests that the error is in the dd utility itself. Check out:
http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Forum6/HTML/003461.html
I checked the geometry of both drives and they were the same and 28629 * 1024 puts us at ~30G. I've seen the number 28629 in too many posts here to think it is a coincidence. I'm assuming the backup is good (I'll find out when I plug it in).
Now I'm wondering if after the 2.0 upgrade should I put back my original A drive, update it and then backup and add my second drive again - so that my backup disk will be up to date?

Snowden- Thanks! you did a better job of searching the forum than I did! Anyway I put the backup in the TiVo and it seems to work just fine!
Regarding your other comment, you should read the many posts which say you should restore to your original state BEFORE you get the 2.0 upgrade. BTW, you can probably still sign up to get 2.0.1 right away- check out the coffee house forum.
Gotta run (going to the ballet).

SUCCESS! I now have 103 hr 25 min! (my 30 hr backup + 60 gig Maxtor)
Lots of thanks to all! to everyone who contributed to the FAQ, and especially tom_h for the Maxtor installation instructions, and to Snowden for giving me confidence in my backup.
Yay!
