Napster Tivo

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So, Last week I arrived home at 9:30, my wife is watching last weeks Will and Grace, I move to my computer. It's not until 11:30PM before I realized that I missed the most talked about Grammy Awards in years! Yes, I forgot to Tivo.

But No fear, I know someone out in the ether has thought to Tivo and keep it for a couple of daze. So I go to my 'puter and fire up Tivo Napster. All the Tivo hacks who have put their Tivos on their networks and installed Tivo Napster have made it easy for me to get that lost Tivo Op back.

I do a simple search and there it is: glip_tvo@thewell.net has it recorded and he's sportin' a T1 line. GET PROGRAM.

I love this game!

Cool!

But when I go to that url, it says under construction.

Also, I would expect their are some copyright laws here that would preclude this site from staying open.

Correct me if I am wrong but I would think this would fall under the "Moron" clause related to this forum.

I really hope this is not becoming wide-spread. It will be bad for us.

The Marksman aims his flame thrower:::::: Moron! Ouch!

Maybe you'ld like to write more on your second more interesting point, why it would be bad..

Cazg,

I was not calling you a moron. Richard Bullwinkle coined the term "Moron" in reference to people who do things that draw unwanted attention to the hacking community and/or cause TiVo problems that force them to address.

I believe this to be one such issue. I think TiVo's partners will demand some sort of action be taking if they get wind of something being refered to as "Tivo Napster".

What will this mean? It could mean all kinds of bad things for anyone with a hacked TiVo.

Of course those who have gone beyond any reliance on TiVo at all (ie getting their own programming guides etc.) will be fine from the TiVo side. Unfortunately those of us who rely on TiVo for data guides and software updates may be treated harshly.

TiVo does not official condone or condem the hacking of the equipment as long as it stays low under the radar. This doesn't seem to fit the bill. So I expect problems will follow.

Really,

Does that mean I am a moron if I tape (VHS) a show and loan it to a friend?

How about if I tape a show, feed from my VCR into my computer, and upload it (to a site that does not mind huge uploads)?

It is only a matter of time before people are trading TV shows on the 'net! Especially with PVR becoming more and more popular! Why should tv shows be any different than music or movies? http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif

I dub movies off the Tivo to my computer in Divx format, burn them to CD, then take them to work. Our monitoring system at work is a Win2K box with 4 video cards feeding 32" Sony's. So I just throw the movies on one of the monitors for the guys.

So now I have 100+ movies on CD, and the library grows by several every week.

What URL? He didn't list one. All he listed was an e-mail address.

Please, folks, if you're gonna troll here, at least get the terminoligy right and *try* to make it convincing.

Well, no. Plenty of non-morons do that.

But, just because non-morons do it and you do too, doesn't necessarily prove that you aren't a moron. So, if you are, in fact, a moron, then it wasn't that action that caused it.

The fact that the person who started this thread was registered this month and had a whopping 4 posts under his belt (two of them in this thread) should be a dead giveaway...

TiVo Napster ? Believe what you want...

4 posts are a dead giveaway for what?

Did I need to post before I added an 80 gig Maxtor to my 14 hour Tivo?

Did I need to post before I added the EtherNet card?

Did I need to post before I learned to program?

What is the giveaway?

Marksman: We are talking about a desktop app that simply queries the hard drive and reports back to a central server. This does not rely on the individual's local Tivo data guide, it wharehouses data from tvgrid.com.

Another post related to trading the Soprano's if you did not subscribe to HBO, well the MPAA is already addressing that issue by asking the FCC to mandate technical barriers to timeshifting premium channels in next gen Tivo's (PTV). I can't put my fingers on the link, but it's out there.

I really think that this doesn't hurt Tivo one bit, and their partners have anticipated this already.
