...of the much coveted Thumbs Up prize... is...
phillove from Pasadena, CA, for donating over 200 days http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/biggrin.gif of processing time to the TiVo Users team in the UD cancer research project!
Here's the main thread for the team, including a link to join up if you haven't done so already:

Thanks for everyone's support.

Not to take anything away from phillove, but he's got at least 12 computers running 24*7 for this project.
He's gonna win the Thumbs Up prize EVERY SINGLE MONTH.
I think it's time to move to a random based winner selection.

I've been thinking about this for a while. The solution will probably be a second monthly prize, chosen completely randomly. I think I'll call it the TiVo Suggestions prize. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif
More info, as I randomly conjure it up, on the original thread...

again, i disagree....
phillove will still ALWAYS win 1 prize every month.
I'm all for a second "TiVo Suggestions Prize", but both prizes should be completely random otherwise you'll always give prizes to the people with the most/most powerful computers.

I agree! I mean for all you know this guy installed the program on all the computers in his office and is just claiming the credit for himself. A random drawing is the only fair solution for those people who really want to help but don't have 12+ computers at their disposal.

Will any of the winners in the US get any of the prizes? Too bad there isn't a Team Tivo for the states.

We could have 2 random drawings, one for the people with CPU > Join Date and another for the ones with CPU < Join Date.

Sure! I'll post the prizes anywhere! http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif The first is off to Pasadena!
The TiVo Users team is open to all TiVo users, wherever they may be. (Right now, that means primarily the US and the UK.)

ybrew and Dan203:
Let me explain this concept called "winning". Its what happens when one person does better than the rest. That's why prizes are given to people who can achieve more than others. It may not seem fair to other competitors, but it is the very existence of a prize for those who achieve the most that often drives all competitors to do more. And those that do achieve the most, should be rewarded.
Now I understand that this is not an equal race - as you say, some people have access to large computer networks while others (like me) only have laptop computers and cannot hope to win the Thumbs Up prize.
So I've decided we'll have two prizes: the monthly Thumbs Up prize is for serious multi-PC members (phillove is not alone in there!) and the monthly TiVo Suggestions prize will be awarded randomly. Furthermore, the TiVo Suggestions prize cannot be won by any member more than once. Both prizes are loveable TiVo Plush Dolls!
I think that's fair. It rewards those who contribute the most points to the TiVo Users team and it rewards all who take part, randomly.
I also think we should change the quarterly Season Pass prize from most points in a "season" to random. (The Season Pass prize is a TiVo lunchbox.) Is anyone particularly for or against that idea? It gives everyone a fair chance.

UPDATE: I've proposed a new prize allocation in TiVo Users Team Update #3 over here: http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/For...TML/000024.html

you can solve the problem by allowing everyone to only win once. if 1 person wins the prize 4 of 5 times in a row, support will probably drop off.

martinwh - That sounds fair to me.

So how does one determine if they are a "serious multi-PC members" or just a normal person. Is it by the processing hours they earn? So then where is the cut off for this classification? My $0.02 is that both/all prizes should be given away randomly, this gives everyone an equal chance, and those who contribute more to the cause, know that they are helping make a difference in the world.

I agree with Mgama.
I still disagree with anything other than ALL random prizes.
The people with the most computers/fastest computers will win, while those people that can't afford anything better than their old pentium 2 233s will only have access to one random monthly drawing.
You know my thoughts on this. I'll stop griping about it.

Î agree with ya..its just another case of "The person with the most money wins" Oh well at least its for a good cause
I think random and one win per person would be the most fair
Going to go see about signing up.My PC and MAC do nothing all day any way. Might as well be helpful...whaaa no Mac version?
