What size backup drive for 30 hour tivo?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The Tivo Hack FAQ link isn't working right now, & I couldn't find the info here. I have a 30hr single drive TIVO (hdr312?). What is the minimum size drive I need to back it up. Please don't round up .For example if a 27gig drive will work, please don't tell me that the smallest drive I need is a 30gig. On the other hand if you know, for example that a 20gig is to small, but a 30gig will work; then let me know that as well.

If you want to use the backup drive as your Tivo "A" drive (recommended; keep original drive in safe place) you will need a 30GB drive (e.g. Quantum LCT20 30GB).

If you use the compression technique as described in the Hack FAQ, you can actually backup into a smaller drive. A virgin drive (one that has never been used to record a show) can be backed up into a image as small as 2Gig. This is what I did in order to backup my drive "on-the-cheap". I then burned 3 CDRS with an image of my Tivo's drive.

My current TIVO is a HDR312. I was actually considering buying another HDR312, to use w/o a sub, for manual recordings. If I do this I guess I can skip the backup altogether, right? The new one would have 1.3sw, but if the current 2.0.1 tanked, I could restore it with the 1.3, use it for manual recording, cancel the sub, and start a new sub with the one that I had been using for manual recording up until that point. That way TIVO wouldn't get pissed that my software changed from 2.0.1 to 1.3, for some reason, & might actually consider upgrading me to 2.0.1 at some point. Is this a procedure that is majorly frowned upon?

I restored my TiVO to 1.3 and never have recorded a show yet. I'm downloading the guide data every night hoping to get 2.0.1 upgraded on my unit. I left the cable feed hooked up. Is that LiveTV buffer being recorded onto the HD? I want to keep my drive as virgin as possible. Please let me know.

If you want to get a small image, DON'T hook up any video source.

Oh.. here I go again. I'm going to restore 1.3 and not connect any video source. I turned off recoding of tivo suggestions but had no idea a video source without recording would take up space too..
