TiVo failed me -- can you help me figure out why?

This is a problem I've had a few times -- TiVo allowed me to set up a recording, but then did not record it because of unavailable disk space -- DESPITE the fact that I know there was in fact space.
This gets to the fundamental issue about TiVo -- can you depend on it to do what it says it will, or not?
I wanted to record The Last Days off HBO Wednesday. When I set up the recording, there was a warning that a ton of shows would have to be deleted earlier than planned, but I OK'd that and the recording showed up in To Do. (Albeit, in RH, it said Won't Record, due to disk space.)
OK, when this happens, shows should record if you're diligent about making sure there's space by the time the show airs, right?
Last Days is 90 mins, and I wanted to record in Best. To ensure there was space, two hours before it aired, I had my wife delete from Now Playing a 2 hour SUID movie (Truly Madly Deeply) recorded at Best. The other things that were in Now Playing at the time Last Days was to air:
1.75 hours of SUID (best quality)
3.75 SUID (med quality)
12.5 Expired (med quality)
My System shows 52 hours and change. I know with 2.0 that's probably 48 hours (at worst quality), but still -- there should have been room. But it didn't record -- and what's odd, RH shows no mention of TMD having been deleted -- even now, about 20 hours after it was deleted.
Can anyone help me figure out what happened, and how to avoid next time?

I ran into this problem a lot after 2.0 was released. It made me stop using SUID. Too much SUID makes the machine think you'll NEVER be erasing those programs and it overcompensates.
I believe that the show would record if there was room at its start time, but I like to see them in the To Do list in advance. That's why I bagged SUID.
