What is Intercast?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

In the program description, it is common to see listed after the show's details (SAP, CC, Intercast). What is Intercast???

Posted by: Joey303

Webopedia describes it as follows:

INTERCAST: A protocol created by Intel in 1996 for broadcasting information, such as Web pages and programs, along with television signals to a PC. With Intercast, a user can watch television on one portion of a PC monitor while receiving relevant information often about the broadcast from the Web on another. To browse the Web for information not being broadcast or not stored on the PC, however, the user must have Internet access through an Internet Service Provider ; Intercast transmits in only one direction.

For example, CNN uses Intercast to broadcast text and links to its Web pages that accompany its TV coverage. To receive Intercast, a user needs a TV tuner add-in card and Intel Intercast Viewer software.

I've seen this in the data as well. Strangely enough, it's in the data for the east feed of the Showtime package, but not in the west feed.

Thanks Joey303. I had a feeling that it had something to do with the internet.

Does anyone know if the TiVo actually stores and retransmits the intercast portion of the signal or if it effectively filters it out?

It does store and output that extended part of the VBI properly (Wink still works as well as WebTV through TiVo). The URLs are in there.

Intercast is also used in TMS data to refer to programs with a web component with or without special data in tv stream including WWTBM.

I know that it outputs lines 21 (closed caption ) and 284 (extended data services) as I've added support for both of these into tivovbi. Both of these services have a maxium bandwidth of 0.503Mbit/s and so storing them doesn't ammount to much. WebTV isn't really comparable to intercast, the idea of WebTV is that a url is embeded in closed captioning and the client goes out onto the internet to receive it; with intercast you have much more bandwidth 5.72Mbit/s and are actually able to transmit the page itself with all the embeded content several times durring the show.

Since MPEG is lossy compression the fields of the VBI handled by TiVo are decoded, stored as binary then reintegrated with the signal when the program is being played back. This raises some interesting questions in regards to the multitude of potential information stored in the VBI, exactly how much information should the TiVo store? There's no point in wasting space with information that's not likely to be seen by the user. Intercast data could easily send several hundered gigabites per hour if you don't take into account that much of the data is repeated. Obviously if you were to store this data you'd want to decode it and store only the minimal amount of information, this however would require the TiVo to understand the format and spend time decoding, not exactly a practical use of resources considering how many couch potatos know or care what intercast is.

So whats up with this??? (A dead thread and a dead technology)

Just set a SP for Push, Nevada and saw it in the information(Intercast, blah blah)....

Will there be clues somehow embedded that only those with intercast will be able to see?????

Just curious...

DocChaos, I'm sure this is what the "Intercast" in the "Push, Nevada" program description is referring to. I've noticed "Intercast" in the TiVo data for every ABC show where they mention "Enhanced TV" at the beginning, such as "Monday Night Football" and, as rasheed noted above, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

So I think the answer is that ABC would like you to believe that additional clues will be available at abc.com.

Intercast isn't totally dead...but you do need an Intercast enabled tv tuner card to access it.

Actually, the web page is broadcast in line 21 of the VBI, you can send the images too if you're crazy enough.

CNN used to use Intercast to post pages with related information about the show at hand.
