My girlfriend got me the Sony TVR which should arrive on my door step later today...hoooooooray!
My Mom just called and asked me to pick up a Tivo for my Dad...only problem is he has DSS (Direct Satelite System)...which Tivo do I need and do I need any other equipment? I am in Los Angeles and will go pickone up today if y'all can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the TiVolution!

What you are actually getting is the Sony SVR-2000.

For your father, I'm assuming that he has DirecTV, since that's the service that called itself DSS for a while. In that case, the best deal is the Philips DSR6000 DirecTV-TiVo combination unit, or the Hughes GXCEBOT (essentially identical to the Philips) - these are available at Circuit City and BestBuy for $99 or less. If he already has a dish, there's nothing needed if you're going to replace his current receiver. If the dish doesn't have a dual LNB, you may want to get a dual LNB dish to replace it (or just replace the current single LNB with a dual - cheaper and easier.) A dual LNB will have two runs of coax from the dish into the house.

If he wants to keep his current receiver and ADD the TiVo, you need something called a "multiswitch" that takes the two inputs from the dish and converts it to four (typically) outputs. The TiVo takes two of the outputs.

Really your Dad has no problem, in fact he's lucky!! The Dtivos are cheaper than SA's and are a big leap forward. Dual tuners are great!!

Please note, though, that if your father receives his locals over cable or OTA, and does not want to or cannot recieve his locals through satellite, and he will want to be able to TiVo the local channels, then he'll need a stand-alone TiVo, either instead of or in addition to a DirecTiVo.
