40GB Drive = How many basic hours?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a 40gb drive in my home PC.

I do not have use for such a large drive there.

Would it be "worth it" to swap my HDR-212 20hr drive out for my PC's 40gb PC drive?

If so, could I then use my current TIVO drive in my home PC after reformatting?

Thanks in advance!

Using it as a replacemant it will get you about 44 hours total at basic, and you will be able to use your other drive in your PC, although you might need to qunlock it (see the Hinsdale how-to for more on that, and full upgrade instructions.

Adding it as a B drive will give you something like 68 hours basic.

This is a smaller upgrade that most that are talked about here, but if you are interested in doubling the amount of space that your tivo has, I'd say to go for it. The 20hr unit has a 21gig drive in it. So, going to a 40 will (more or less) double your space. That's a slight lie due to reserved space that tivo borrows when you cross 30 hours, but you will approximately double your recording time.

The drive in the tivo would be suitable for use in a home pc. You might need to permanently unlock it or do something similar (search the faq and for threads on this) but it should work. Be sure to keep a backup of your original tivo file that you get from mfstool, and good luck!

There is a potential problem with this combination: OS 2.5.1, TiVoMad, and 40GB drive. It only gives you about 32 hours, same as a 30GB drive. Don't know what would happen if you start with a previous OS version (45+ hours) and then let TiVo upgrade it to 2.5.1.
