DTivo with 2.5 and dual drives - Should I even try?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just finished upgrading my single drive unit and was going to get to my dual drive unit today, but after reading the latest Hinsdale How-To, I got depressed.

Should I even try to upgrade it?

What will the image (the one that doesn't work) do when I boot up?

Thanks,

Brad

I upgraded my two drive DSR6000 with the 2.5 software. No problems. Just make sure that you get the boot CD with DTivoMad 4.0 and follow Hinsdale's How-To and you should have no problems.

Its really pretty easy, the biggest pain is getting both drives into your computer.. Yes I have too many drives in there already :) Other than that it's just like a single drive unit. The backup from the two drive DSR6k can just be restored to a single larger drive.

On mine I keep the two drives as backups and only installed a new 80 gig drive. I could have stuck the 30 gig A drive in, and I might at some point, but I just wanted to make sure everything was cool..

Just follow Hindale's instructions. I've done 2, two-drive, T60s with no problems. I chose to upgrade bpth drives (80GB) so I just saved the original drives as backups.

Good Luck!

I guess I should have made clear the fact that Hinsdale's How-To talks about the problem of restoring an 2.5 image from "divorced drives". Have all you done it with the latest Tivo version installed or from an original dual drive unit with 2.0?

I think most of the problems are with the SAs not the DTiVos. My T-60 was a dual drive with 2.5.0 and I had no non self created problems:D

I was on 2.5 when I did mine no problem..

Thanks. I will try the upgrade and will post the results. I think your words are encouraging and should let Hinsdale know because his How-To makes it sounds like the success rate has been very low.

My heart stopped when I read that part of the How To also.
I thought I had a single drive DTivo when I ordered my 120GB maxtor form Newegg for $211. When I took the cover off, I saw 2 drives! I hurridly read the instructions for this situation and thought I was toast! I had planned on keeping recordings but that was out of the question now. I wasn't even sure if the upgrade would work at all. I just followed the instructions and everything went fine. I kept my Tivo drives right on the factory bracket while doing the copy.
I now have a single drive DTivo with 120GB = 109 hours.
I still don't understand that section of the HowTo that implies that it will not work.
I used AMSET /Quiet and disabled write verify.
I also used the recertify drive test from maxtor before I did anything.

I have a dual drive Sony SAT-T60 with one 30GB and one 15GB drive. I want to expand it using a Maxtor 120GB HD. My Tivo is running version 2.5. I have read conflicting reports that I may run into trouble when attempting to upgrade. I have never upgraded a Tivo before and need a little guidance from some of the veterans out there. I have downloaded Kazymyr's Boot Cd and have the new 120GB drive in hand. Any advice?
