My TiVo remote control doesn't work
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was fiddling with my remote control today and removed the battery flap. I didn't touch the batteries and put the flap back on. Now for some reason, the remote control doesn't work at all! It doesn't even control my TV anymore! I have tried removing the batteries and reseating them but nothing!
Why is this?
Cheers.

Errr... the batteries are dead and you taking the back off was a coincidence :)

No they were new when I put them in and I have only had it a month. It has happened before but they normally work in the end. Try it! :)

Those remotes gobble batteries - maybe you left something pressing on one of the buttons. Try new ones!

I think the UK Tivo remote does not gobble power - it just refuses to work when below a certain voltage - a design fault?
You can take the 'dead' batteries out of a UK Tivo remote and put them in an almost identical US Tivo remote, or any other remote control you have and those 'dead' batteries will work happily for months.
Best bet is probably to buy a pair of cheap rechargeable alkaline battery and charger, as these give 1.5 V when charged, and you don't end up Tivoless one night as all your AA batteries in the house are at 1.25V or less and the UK Tivo remote wants 1.28V or more!
The environmentally unfriendly & more expensive option is to get a spare set of Duracells.

Rechargeables are usually 1.2 volts - go check ;)

NiCD and NimH are 1.2 to 1.35V. These can be recharged 1000 times.
Rechargeable alkalines are 1.5V. These are cheaper, but can only be charged a few hundred times, but this should be enough so that your great grand children can enjoy TiVo too!
Rayovac site

I used Rayovac batteries in the Psion 5 for about a year, they do operate at 1.5V as Cyril says. However, I never managed to charge them much more than 10 times but they have no memory effect and "like being charged often" as the blurb says. Great batteries, crap life!

Rayovac batteries have to be constantly charged up to last 100 times or more.
10 seems pretty bad - you must have got a duff set, as I've been able to use them at least 50 times, though I think one pair out of 5 only lasted 30 or so.
