TiVo let me down over New Year....

TiVo let me down for the first time seriously. We left for a New Year break last Saturday morning. Unfortunately TiVo crashed at 2am on Saturday morning registering a 0:00 (Partial) recording of Goodness Gracious Me.
TiVo didn't record any programmes between then and my return last night, when I had to power cycle the unit to get it to respond to the remote control. It also didn't dial up which meant that when it rebooted, it had a message warning me that it hadn't made a successful call for over 5 days. It also seemed to take a very long time to configure the modem after rebooting before I could make a successful call.
To be honest, TV is not so important to me that I am too upset about the programmes missed - these things happen and I probably wouldn't have set the VCR for most of them, so I can live without them, but any ideas what might have caused this and whether this presages a full TiVo crash?

I think I get a Tivo crash maybe once per unit per year. Most of the time it just recovers after a reboot, the other times it looks as though it's dead, but eventually recovers 2 hours after power on.
I have had one drive out of 30 fail with media errors, but this was fixed using Maxtor's free powermax software.
If your Tivo's hard drives are clicking and loud, it's a sign that your hard drives are about to fail.
