DISH Picture Quality

Has anyone else noticed recently that Dish's PQ is degrading. Most stations I don't notice a difference, but I do record the NBC Nightly News every night and in the last couple of days, I've noticed that the picture looks real "bright" on people's faces, etc., almost as if I were recording in High quality rather than Best. I even double checked the Tivo to make sure it was recorded in Best. My locals are through the dish in Kansas City, and I suspect this probably coincides with them throwing up more and more locals crowding the transponders.

I don't get locals over E*, but the PQ on ESPN for the bowl games on new years' day really sucked. The pixelization on the sat looked awful directly from the receiver. After the TiVO buffer, it was absolutely unwatchable.

The PQ has really gone down over the past couple of weeks. I' switching to a DTivo immediately.

I'm not a DISH customer, but I can almost guarantee it is due to the fact that they are now required to carry about twice as many locals in the same amount of space.

You're right. Dish turned up the compression (and tweaked it a bit, so I've been told) to fit all the must carry stations. Dish expects to launch a spot beam satellite in the next few months that should help out a bit.

Don't hold your breath for DISH picture quality improvements. Their new spot beam satellite can't quite satisfy the requirement. A lot of the added space will need to be used to get the locals off the side satellites that they're currently on.

DISH can't really resolve their picture quality problems until BOTH E*7 and E*8 are up and running.

I noticed something similar while at my neighbors house the other night and posted about it here. Dish was not this bad back in August/September when I left.

Yes, I noticed the same thing, especially after I purchased a big-screen HDTV - the picture, on almost all channels, was pixellated and "mooshy."

I decided to try cable again - and was amazed that in reality the picture quality on my cable system is far superior to dish. Plus, my cable dudes gave me a great deal, so I got rid of Dish Network.

It's pretty sad, because I first got DirecTV (before I got DIsh) about five years ago; the picture quality was AMAZING.

I got DISH about a year and a few months ago, and the picture seemed to get progressively worse; once I got the big screen, it was virtually unwatchable.

I'm happy with cable now!

I just watch HBO and news stuff and HBO seems the same as before

I have a 53" Sony XBR and haven't noticed any degradation for the channels I watch. They can adjust the compression on a per-channel basis, so that's not to say that others aren't worse.
