OK, I'm using Kazmyr's Boot CD. I now know that I'm trying to save to hda2. However, every time I try to back up my Tivo A drive, this is what happens:
scanning source drive. please wait a moment.
source drive size is 23 hours.
backup image will be 23 hours.
uncompressed backup size: 960 mb
backing up 112 mb of 960 mb (THIS IS WHERE IT STOPS EVERY TIME)
backup failed: /mnt/dos/tivo.bak: success
OK, so what do I do from here? Why does it keep stopping at 112 MB every time I try to save?

Maybe there's a problem with the A drive the backup is hanging on. I don't know what you could do about it though - maybe reset the drive back to factory presets (I think this is possible) which would delete all your custom information and then try to back it up - which would be a much smaller backup and possibly miss the problem that was hanging the previous backup. If that worked, and the restore test to your B drive worked, I would reformat and exercise the A drive and then restore to it; test; and only then bless the B drive. It seems like a long process, but it doesn't look like you got alot of options.

With the help of Kazmyr, I fixed the problems I was having. I didn't know which hda drive it was after all, but I found out quickly enough using this simple command: cfdisk /dev/hda
It tells you what the partitions are -- hda1, hda2, etc. -- and how big they are. HUGE HELP! Once I did this, I was able to upgrade within an hour!:D

Ok, if you're running Windows XP, make a FAT32 partition on your c: drive using a program like bootit. DO NOT LOG INTO WINDOWS XP WITH YOUR TIVO DRIVE(S) ATTACHED. Then when you load your CD boot disk, after you press enter, run the cfdisk command I mentioned above to figure out which partition is your FAT32 partition. Then follow the Hinsdale instructions to the letter except change the hard drive you're writing on to the designation of your FAT32 partition -- it'll be something like HDA2 oe HDA3 instead of HDA. If you hook everything up according to Hinsdale and follow the instructions carefully, it should be fine. Let me know if you need any more help. I'm at retroactive71@msn.com.
