Okay, this looks hot to me (especially since it looks like there's no tax for CA residents :) ).

One question -- I notice that there are two Maxtor 80GB drives, the D540X and the DiamondMax at $165 and $171 respectively. The DiamondMax has a slightly lower seek time (9ms vs 12ms). Should I go for this in preference to the D540X, or is there really no difference?

(I notice that the DiamondMax80 is the one sold by 9thtee in its Tivo Upgrades section...)

EDIT: Well, after various forum searches it seems that many people have been successful with both, so I've ordered the D540X for $123.46. Now I'm wishing I'd paid the extra for fast delivery -- can't wait to upgrade my DSR6000 :D

Thanks,
cp

Good deal with a 3 year warranty!

You can also knock another 2% off by making your purchase through Ebates .

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I can't wait for my drive to arrive!

Woo Hoo!!! :D Just ordered my Maxtor 80GB for $123.46 :D

I tried going through ebates, but the annoying pop-up ads made me say "NO". For the lousy $2.40 it would save me I'd rather not support a pop-up ad factory :(

Thanks for the tip Dennis! :)

Is there still free shipping available?

Posted by: HTnut

Shipping is still free as of this morn. ONly problem i have is that i ordered the wrong one the other day then find out the order never made it through even though i got an order "acknowledgement". I just ordered the correct one this morn and again got the order "ackknowledgement" email. We'll see if it actually processes an order now.

Dell branded peripherals are 20 percent off. So if you buy the Dell 80GB drive and use the same coupon, you can get the drive for $118.20

And by the way, I used eBates once and NEVER received ANYTHING from them. A waste of time.

Posted by: HTnut

The only issue with buying the Dell branded one is that unless its installed in one of their computers, it has a 90 day warranty only..

Posted by: DennisK

boblinds -- yes, the Dell drive is a Seagate 80GB 7200rpm Barracuda IV. Myself and others bought this drive which is what kind of led to this thread.

See my thread titled "Dell mystery drive is..." -- it was noted that the "Dell" HD is only warrantied for one year *IF* it is used in a Dell computer and only 90 days if not.

It was noted that for a few more dollars there's also a Western Digital 80GB drive with a *5* year warranty if you are really looking for peace of mind. :)

EDIT: and also see the thread "Dell Brand Seagate drives warning"

Strange, I've saved a bunch of cash with ebates over the past 1.5 years. You only get $$ from them when you accumulate $5 in rebates, so maybe that was the issue?

The 2% Dell discount is particularly useful when purchasing a computer from them.

I am not able to get the 20% off on Dell website since the Maxtor is not a Dell branded peripheral. Also how do I avail the $25 coupn from techbragains? I searched for the coupon on their website but could not find it.

Also if I do get a coupon code, the Dell Website does not ask me for a coupon code when I make my order.

Can u explain?

The Seagate is a "Dell-branded" upgrade, hence it qualifies for 20% off. I think this deal is still available.

The Maxtor drive is still available with a 10% discount. However, the "$25 of $150 purchase" coupon that was "stackable" (able to be combined with other offers) expired on 1/7.

I think www.newegg.com has the Maxtor 80GB drive available for $135 delivered. Search the forums for "newegg" -- many folks here are pretty satisfied with their service.

I also found the Maxtor 80GB drive at www.accessmicro.com for about $140 delivered. Have never dealt with them, so can't give you any more info than that.

I have had NOTHING but probs with Dell and their website ordering. After a week of problems with them and UNBELIEVABLE hold times with customer service i finally ordered it on the phone and when they told me the lead time to get it out was nearly five days i told them to shove it. I ordered from NewEgg and it shipped the SAME day..

BTW, if you aren't averse to mail-in rebates, OfficeMax has the Western Digital 80GB (7200rpm) HD for $199.99 - $80 rebate this weekend. See their weekend flyer.

EDIT -- note the terms on the rebate form, "Must be purchased between 1/13/02 thru 1/19/02" so the deal start this Sunday.

Now some folks claim OfficeMax will accept competitor's coupons. If that was true there are OfficeDepot ($20 off $100) and Staples ($40 off $200) coupons out there that would really make this a hot deal. Unfortunately for me, I called my local OfficeMax this morning and they do not accept competitor's coupons. :( But you may have better luck...

For about the same $/GB (~$1.80) as the current deal you can get from Dell (80GB - $143.20 shipped) you can get the new Maxtor 120GB at New Hardware Shop http://store.yahoo.com/nexthardware...x1254oemba.html it will be $221.41 shipped to me in Washington.

Pricewatch lists the 120 for $206 + 14 shipping.

80 GB?

How many hours of recordings does that give you?

Posted by: DennisK

When added to the existing (45GB?) HD -- 106 hours.

Posted by: HTnut

Well since making sure my oder from Dell was cancelled on Thurs. i went ahead as noted and ordered from Newegg. The Newegg arrived yesterday..GREAT same day shipment. Today the Dell drive i cancelled showed up at my door.

40GB (on my Sony T60). 40GB + 80GB ~= 106 hrs. :D

You can lower the price even more if you use an American Express Blue card and pricematch it. Pricewatch shows that a company called 7Bytes is selling the retail WD 80gb for $165.

$200 - $80 MIR - $35 Pricematch = $85 (tax excluded)

It's a hit-and-miss deal with OfficeMax. Some managers are very nice and allow you to use competitor's coupons, but some flat out refuse to do it. As far as I can tell, no one on the techbargains forums has been able to find OfficeMax's exact policy on dealing with this, so your best bet is just to go in and talk with the manager face to face. Plus, I think the Staples coupon is off $250, so you'd need to buy something else along with the hard drive.

A quick reminder since I didn't see it mentioned in this thread (I know I saw it somewhere though). I ordered an 80 gig HD from Dell but ended up with a Seagate Barracuda drive instead. This a 7200 rpm drive and some users seem to prefer the 5400 rpm variety just for the heat issue. I've also seen somewhere that this particular 7200 rpm drive runs a little cooler then typical drives of this type.

Does anyone have experience using such a drive at 7200 rpm, versus the 5400 rpm. What are the pros and cons if any?
thanks

Now that the officemax rebate is over, where is the best place for an 80GB. Does anyone have experience with 7200 vs. 5400 drives. Are there pros and cons?
thanks
