Help !!! Cant mount the c: drive

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Canuck

I have begun my upgrade and have the

c: as primary master
tivo as seconday master
cd as secondary slave

I only have three power supplies so I need to backup and Bless in two steps.

The problem is i boot up and type

mkdir /mnt/dos................no problem

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

it comes back
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1, or to many mounted file systems

Whats wrong ?????

So what o/s do you use and what is the first partition type on the c: drive?

I don't understand what you mean by "only 3 power supplies"? Do you mean 3 power plugs to connect to drives? If so, you can pick up a y-power cable at almost any store that carries computer parts.

Im on win 98 but unsure How to check the first partition type on the c: drive

I'll have to buy a Y-plug tomorrow

OK I right click on the c-drive and it says file system fat32 and 37 gig free

If I type

Mount /dev/hda2 mnt/dos

It replies
/dev/hda2: success
mount: you must specify the file system type

what does that mean ?

I think you may have a nonstandard partitioning scheme on your disk. Give details about your machine.

If I type

Mount /dev/hda2 mnt/dos

/dev/hda2: success

Its a gateway 466

I just bought a new maxtor 40 gig hard drive for it. I can format it any way you tell me to. I have tried it with win 95 win 98.

Its a fat32 what kind of partioning do I need ?.. Ill just reformat it

Pay close attention when you boot up Linux - there's a line that should ready:

Partition check:

hda: hda1 < hda5 >

or similar.

If you get partitions in the angle brackets, it means that one of the partitions outside of the angle brackets (in this case, hda1) is an extended partition, and the partitions inside the angle brackets (in this case, hda5) is the logical partition that has to be mounted.

Thus, the partitions which can be mounted are listed and can be found on bootup. Perhaps your hda1 is really just an extended partition...

what it says is

hda : [EZD] [remap 0->1] [4866/255/63] hda1

and when I run cfdisk it says

hda1 boot primary win95 fat32 (lba) 40024.22

and it still won't mount .... do you think it is my gateway 466 PC ?

Posted by: Canuck

Ok now I have mine setup so in the bootup screen it says

Partition check
hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 >

when I do a cfdisk it replies
hda1 primary win95 fat32 6292.34
hda5 logical win95 fat32 33731.88

If I do a mount command it replis

mount : you must specify the filesystem type

I have workd on this for three days now and cannot figure out what is not working. Im starting to think it is my Gateway 466. Because this is a brand new drive i ut in just for this backup and I boot off a dos floppy and MFStools cd

Any help would be appreciated

The mount command I did on the previos reply was

mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/dos
and
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
