Does TiVonet kill the modem?

I have spent all day working on my TiVo to get the TiVonet working. My TiVo (UK model made by Thomson) has already been upgraded to 2x80GB disks and I still have the original 40GB disk. The plan was to re-image the two new disks again from the original. I did this, then ran through the Worley stuff. Didn't quite work smoothly but fortunately I'm an old hand with Linux and scripts so I figured this bit out OK. I can probably feed back some improvements to the script if anyone's interested.

Anyway, I eventually got the TiVo working with the two new disks again, and was pretty impressed when I could telnet to the TiVo (and not a serial cable in sight). Everything seemed great until I tried a test call. It failed with "number unavailable". It seems not to even attempt to dial the number. I was worried that I had somehow blown the modem up. I tried it with the old disk, and perplexingly it worked fine. The difference is that the old disk is "virgin" with no TiVonet drivers or other non-TiVo software (and it's going to stay that way), whereas the new disks have all the stuff from the Worley disk.

So what is happening? Does the TiVo detect that I have ethernet so not use the modem? Or is there some interrupt related issue? It's not an IP routing issue since I never added the default route. I'm not planning to use the ethernet for updates so there was no need to route to anywhere except my own LAN. Is there anyone with some good advice please?

Yes. If TiVo detects that there's a network card (i.e., there's an interface named eth0), then it'll use that instead of the modem.

If you want to use TiVoNet and the modem, you'll have to edit one of the TiVoNet modules and replace eth0 with say, tiv0...

I should have read on a bit further into the underground forum because I found more info about this. I have now changed the interface to be called tiv0 using a hex editor on tivone.o and hey presto...

Thanks for the help,
Dave. :D
