between the At&t TCD and the Philips HDR 312?
Thanks

The AT&T is the first of the 2nd Gen SA's

- 40Hr (312 = 30hr)
- faster processor
- 32MB Ram (312 =16MB)
- Controls on faceplate
- USB ports (currently unsupported)

Thanks Andy, but is the Philips HDR 312 any good?

The AT&T TiVo works with cable, satellite, etc. It's not exclusive to AT&T cable.

The Philips and Sony TiVos are still awesome and have the same functionality. The only major differences are the faster CPU on the AT&T and the USB connections.

I'd evaluate it almost entirely on price. Philips and Sony TiVos are available in 20, 30, and 60 hour capacities (and with a fairly painless step-by-step process, can drop in a hard drive or two and boost capacity to 200 hours or more).

The AT&T TiVo is a 40 hour unit.

You haven't considered DirecTV have you? Cause TiVo has a DirecTV-integrated box for about $100 for 30 hours and can record 2 things at once. :)

The AT&T also has:
- better manual (what buttons to press in order to get to different Tivo features, at the bottom of each page)
- better cable box control (AT&T cable boxes are specifically mentioned, what codes to use, layout of cable boxes)
- better remote control (more buttons, easy switching between 2 tivos)
- coverage of PPV shows and what to do
- better remote control instructions

It looks like they left out the:
- extra RCA audio/video cable
- s-video cable

The layout of the backpanel is different: vertical, slotted arrangement instead of horizontal of connections

The USB slot is physically covered up, so there's nothing to plug a cable into

In the "Viewer's guide" in selecting between cable and satellite input, the layout of the backpanel depicts the older SA models, rather than the existing layout of the AT&Tivo

--------------

I may reprint the manual just for the cable box control instructions.

I didn't know about that. Are the plugs covered with pop-out tabs, or is there no way to get to them without maiming the box? It seems kind of silly to add new hardware to the next-gen unit for some future features, but then make it difficult for the end users to get to that hardware later.

I'm basing this on the picture that in the online AT&Tivo manual:

http://www.tivo.com/images/manuals/...ionalsetups.pdf

There's an outline of a square, but that's about it. I don't see any jacks that you could plug cables into.

So, unless you want to void your warranty, it looks like USB won't make it until the 3rd generation tivo box.

Thank you for the correction.
