dual 160GB Sony DirecTivo upgrade?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hey, I've been away from the forums for a while so I've kind of lost touch with whats going on...
anyway I'm considering getting a Sony T60. According to the TiVo site, the 2.5 upgrade for the T60s lets you use both tuners, the main reason for getting one, as well as a handful of other reasons.
Anyway, heres the questions, and I apologize if answers were posted in another thread 5 minutes ago or on some really obvious site that I should know about. Yes I know I'm a lazy bum :)
1. Can I put dual 160GB drives in a T60 and have it utilize all the space? What tools would I use for this?
2. Are most of the new T60s single drive units, and will having a factory dual unit affect upgradability?
3. TiVoNet: has it evolved to the level where I could put TiVo data (encrypted or not) on a separate RAID array using SMB? I dont mean to step on anyones toes here, I saw the notice about video extraction talk being bad. Its just that in a month or two I may have ~300GBytes of SMB storage, and would love to be able to use it. IIRC the main problem was the throughput, the board was limited to a few hundred k/sec. Has this been fixed?
4. Are there any other wonderful hacks I should know about for a SVR2000 or a SAT-T60?
thanks

Welcome back,
1) yes and no, you can now TiVoMad the A: drive so you can have a dual 160 GB machine, however there is a recognition limit @ 137GB per IDE channel on all TiVos, so max anyone can have is 274GB
2) Most if not all NEW T-60s have a single 40GB drive, but it does not mater anymore if they are single or dual drive.
3) way over my head :p
4) dont know :(
Are you aware that the Sony, Philips and Hughes DTiVos are all basically the same except for the save to a Sony vcr, remote and price? ;)

thanks, that helps (I can save a little if I can find a 140gb drive).
and yeah I know they're the same... was the same back in the day with the original SA TiVos. I look at the T60 tho because AFAIK it can control a sony VCR, is that still the case?
Aside from a lower price, would I get anything from a Philips or Hughes unit like maybe a component out? Which remote is considered 'preferred'? Also I use a Pronto some of the time, would the codes from one be compatible with another (between directivos)?
thanks

T60 can control SOME Sony VCRs
no component out on any TiVO.
people prefer the remote that they prefer - generally people who had a Philips first prefer the peanut, people who had a Sony first don't.
Save a lot by getting two 120Gb drives - you'll "only" have 34Gb less useable space.
not sure about codes between one manufacturer and another. I know the Sony SAs and Sony DTiVOs are completely different. You can "train" all TiVos to different remote codes so that they don't all respond at once when they are in the same room.
