Compression artifacts with WD 120 GB

My dad bought a 30 hr Tivo a year ago. It's been sitting on the shelf since he bought it. While visiting a couple of weeks ago, I installed it for him. Everything worked fine.
We went to CompUSA and they had the 120GB drive for $299 with a $100 rebate. Using Hinsdale's excellent instructions. I copied the image from the 30GB drive to the 120 and TivoMadded it.
I hooked it all back up and everything worked fine. I set the recording quality to medium, which works fine for me. When we left, it was working fine and the video quality was good (better than mine at home, but his cable TV is better than mine.
When I spoke to him on the phone, he told me that there was a lot of distortion, kind of like when you tune in a digital channel. I am assuming this is a video artifacting problem he is describing.
The problem occurs when watching live TV, which is supposed to record at best quality.
Has anyone had any experience with a problem like this? Is the problem connected to the speed of data flow from the drive? I would think that a drive this size running at 7200 RPM would have a faster data transfer rate than a smaller drive.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
