Remote Question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have DirectTV with the Sony SAT box. Currently I have to use the TiVo remote to turn on the TV and the Satellite, then I have to use another separate remote to turn on the audio receiver (separate surround sound system). Is there a way to have the audio receiver turn on automatically when I turn on the TV or SAT? (Sorta like the way I have my computer monitor turn on when I turn on my computer.)

I love the TiVo remote and don't want to switch to a universal remote.

TIA,

Actually yes! The TiVo remote will hold both a TV code and A/V receiver code. So just go into the A/V receiver section of the remote setup screen, program the remote with a code from your A/V receiver manufacture, and from then on it will control both your TV and receiver.

Great -- thanks! Can't wait to go try this.

One hint...

This will also make it so the TiVo remote controls the volume and mute on both devices, which is less then ideal. To clear the remote of the codes for the TV volume/mute hold TiVo and Mute until the LED stays lit, then enter 0000. To clear the A/V receiver volume/mute do the same thing but enter code 1000.

Now I'm not 100% sure this works on the Sony remote, as I've only tried it on the Philips peanut.

I have this set-up. However it only controls the mute and volume of the A/V equipment. The Tivo's power button will only power up the TV.

Yes, that's what I discovered last night. My DH had already set this up, and it doesn't control the power. Oh well...

Exactly the same with my Phillips peanut.

Me too, with my AT&T peanut and Yamaha receiver. Does volume and mute, but not AV power....

On my Sony SVR-2000, a standalone Sony TiVo receiver, I have put in the code for my RCA TV and my Sony AV receiver. The power button turns on/off both the receiver and the TV. Actually it just cycles the power, so, the remote with make each device turn off if it's on, or turn on if it's off. It's kinda funny (and confusing to my wife) when they get out of sync. You have to shield one component with your hand (or *gasp* get up and turn one of them off or on!).

Are the setup codes for Dtivo peanut different than the SA Peanut?

I got an old Dtivo peanut and use it on my SA peanut and I can control my Toshiba TV with the SA, but the codes don't work on the DTivo peanut.

Anybody with Dtivo mind PM me the list of codes for Toshiba TV?

DirecTiVo remote doesn't work with some Toshibas (if not all).

I've got a Toshiba. Same boat as you. However I've got an MX-500 so it doesn't matter for me anymore.

Do a search on this and you'll see much frustration.

re: Toshiba TV's

I've got a 4-6 yr old 27" and the peanut works fine on it. Set up tv/av setup on peanut and it powers on/off the Toshiba TV and Sony receiver - volume only does receiver (not TV simultaneously).

Hmmm... it's been a long time since I played with this but I could have swore it worked the power for both devices!

I'll try it tonight and see if I can come up with a combination that works.

If you can't find a solution with the remote, there's still another way to do what you want.

I have a special power strip that I got from Radio Shack years ago. One of the outlets on it is the "master" outlet. Whenever you turn on that device, it then supplys power to the other outlets.

I use it for my stereo system. My receiver is plugged into the "master" outlet, so when I turn it on my tape deck and CD player turn on also (obviously I leave the power switches on those components in the "On" position).

If one of the "slave" devices has a standby mode, this might not work tho...
