I just sold something on ebay and I would like the check to clear before i mail the merchandise. Does anyone know how long it typically takes a check to clear?

It could take a week. You should be able to check with your bank (I do mine online) and see when the check actually clears and the cash is available.

I think it depends on your bank, and how much the check and where it's from. I think the outside limit is generally 5 business days (which would probably be the case for an out-of-state check that's over $100) (and of course MLK day doesn't count).

The check is for apprx $40. Normally I wouldn't care, but the buyer has a rating of (-1).

Best thing might be to call your bank or (as Tasky suggests) keep an eye on your acct. I think sometimes they will credit you upfront on the first $100 of a check, but if the check later bounced they might just take it out of your acct. anyway.

If it's a check paying for a bill? 4 days or 30 minutes before your paycheck is direct-deposited, whichever is sooner.

If it's a check from someone to you? 8 days.

I'd send the check back to them and say no way.. If you cash it and it bounces your bank will hit you with a charge, and with a -1 feedback, well there's a good chance of that happening!
