Buying upgradded VS ATT&Tivo - HELP

I really need some advice. I'm trying to decide whether to order one of the AT&T boxes or buy one of those already upgraded boxes (probably Philips) from ebay. I'd really like to have the extra time for recording, but I'm worried about reliability.
Questions...
1. In your experience, how stable are the upgrades once they are successful?
2. Could the upgraded be screwed up by later software updates from Tivo (that you have no control over)?
3. Any difference in picture quality noticed with the new upgraded drives?
4. Any experience with these "professionally" upgraded ebay machines?
5. Because of the upgrade, Tivo won't help me should something go wrong, correct?
Thanks a MILLION for your insight.

Playit,
A lot has been written all over these forums about upgraded TiVos. I don't think you'll find anyone who would say that upgrading causes a loss of recording quality. I also don't think you'll find (m)any who would say that future software upgrades could destroy your upgrade. TiVo has generally been VERY supportive of upgraders, and any decision on their part to alienate upgraders would be extraordinarily detrimental to TiVo's business.
We have found, especially recently, that buying in quantity has reduced prices significantly...which has led to a HUGE price reduction in already-upgraded TiVos.
Buying from a professional upgrader obviously gives you peace of mind at a small premium over the actual cost of the goods. With an investment of time and a PC, you could buy a standalone TiVo and upgrade it yourself with the same result.
You are technically correct that buying an upgraded TiVo will void the manufacturer's 3-month warranty.
Good luck!
